Graduate Diploma in City Planning

The Graduate Diploma in City Planning, as a nested program within the Master of City Planning, is designed to equip students for rewarding professional work involved in planning for 21st century global-local challenges including rapid urbanisation, climate change, resource constraints, globalisation and technological disruption.

With its distinctive urban design orientation, the program will cultivate city planners and urban designers with the global perspective, knowledge, skills and adaptability to make a substantial contribution to addressing these challenges.

The structure of the Graduate Diploma of City Planning is based on theoretical and practical subjects. This program is designed in close consultation with prominent industry professional boards to ensure the integrity and contemporary relevance of the degree.

Foundation Subject (7)Must complete eight subjects (80 cp), including at least seven from the following list

• General Elective (1)Students must choose one elective from the list of available postgraduate subjects from across the University.  Students may apply to do an internship as an elective.

Academic entry requirements

Completion of an Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7 Bachelor degree or equivalent from an approved institution.

As tuition is delivered in English, all students will be required to provide documented evidence of the required level of proficiency in the English language. Read more detailed information on English language proficiency requirements for university study.

Credit for prior study

Subject credits may be awarded for previous studies. To apply for credits, you will need to submit academic transcripts including detailed subject outlines/course descriptions for each relevant subject and/or certified copies of testamurs to the Office of Future Students. Please refer to how to apply for credit for more information

The need for strategic planning of cities is increasing globally in what has been dubbed ‘the urban century’: around four Billion people, 55% of the world’s population, now live in cities and the proportion is expected to rise to 68% by 2050. City planners will play a major role in assisting cities to meet climate change challenges and take advantage of rapid advances in technology.
