The Graduate Diploma in Sustainable Environments and Planning provides an opportunity for students to undertake studies in the fields of Environmental Management and Urban Design and Planning.

Qualifications in both areas of study are in demand worldwide due to global population growth, increasing urbanisation and significant environmental challenges.

This degree provides the opportunity to gain professional skills required for work in a variety of natural and built environment fields involved in creating sustainable environments.

With this qualification, graduates will be able to undertake work relating to urban planning and environmental management or progress onto further studies within the same discipline.

With this qualification, professionals from a built environment background will be able to undertake urban planning and development at a professional level.

Other entrants will need to articulate to the Master of Sustainable Environments and Planning in order to gain professional recognition in urban and regional planning.

If you have obtained a cognate undergraduate degree and seek accreditation by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) you must complete the following eight subjects:

  • Economics of Sustainable Development
  • Environmental Management and Climate Change
  • Planning Theory and Ethics
  • Project Resource Planning
  • Regional Planning Policy and Practice
  • Sustainable Communities
  • Elective Subjects (x2) from the Faculty

If you are not seeking accreditation from PIA you may complete eight subjects from the following:

  • Economics of Sustainable Development
  • Environmental Assessment
  • Environmental Management and Climate Change
  • Environmental Science Fieldwork
  • Planning and Assessment Processes
  • Planning Theory and Ethics
  • Regional Planning Policy and Practice
  • Sustainable Communities
  • Urban Design and Place Making

Entry requirements

Academic entry requirements

Completion of an Australian Bachelor degree or equivalent at an approved institution.

English language proficiency requirements

As tuition is delivered in English, all students will be required to provide documented evidence of the required level of proficiency in the English language. Read more detailed information on English Language Proficiency Requirements for university study.

Credit for prior study

Subject credits may be awarded for previous studies. To apply for credits, you will need to submit academic transcripts including detailed subject outlines/course descriptions for each relevant subject and/or certified copies of testamurs to the Office of Future Students. Please refer to how to apply for credit for more information
