Master of Professional Psychology

The Master of Professional Psychology will provide selected Psychology graduates with a fifth year of professional training in Psychology.

The degree will incorporate both coursework and supervised training and practice withthe aim to provide students with a thorough grounding in professional practice to meet the accreditation standardsset by APAC.

On completion of this program, students will be able to seek registration as a general Psychologist following a further sixth year of approved supervised practice.

The Master of Professional Psychology program comprises 7 subjects, as follows:

Core subjects (5)

• Counselling Psychotherapies and Clinical Skills (PSYC71-503)
• Advanced Psychological Assessment (PSYC71-504)
• Research Methods, Professional Practice and Ethics (PSYC71-505)
• Psychopathology and Therapy: Adults 1 (PSYC71-506)
• Psychopathology and Therapy: Adults 2 (PSYC71-607)

Electives (1)

Students must choose one (1) elective subject from:

• Evidence Based Counselling & Therapy Practices across the Lifespan (PSYC71-415)

Practical (1)

• Professional Experience and Practice in Psychology (PSYC72-422)

Students complete 300 hours of practicum. This supervised professional experience will occur partly through clinical activities in the Bond University Psychology Clinic under staff supervision. Some off-campus clinical placement/practical learning may also be required each semester.

International students

Students must enrol in 40 credit points per semester.

Domestic students

Students must enrol in 40 credit points per semester.

Academic entry requirements

Completion of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited 4 year sequence of study in psychology (e.g., Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours); Graduate Diploma of Psychological Science or equivalent) within the last 10 years, and have achieved a minimum of one of H2B (Lower Second Class Honours), or 65-74% average for consideration. Applicants must also be eligible for provisional registration as a psychologist. Applicants are assessed on academic performance, 2 referee reports and personal suitability via interview.

Students who have obtained their qualifications outside Australia must have their qualifications assessed prior to applying for this program and prior to applying for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia. The Australian Psychological Society (APS) provides this assessment service for the Board and the assessment assists the Board in determining if the student’s qualifications are equivalent to an ‘approved qualification’. However, it is important to note the final decision on equivalence rests with the Board. For more information on equivalency assessments please visit Australian Psychological Society.

Condition of enrolment

All students must obtain provisional registration from the Psychology Board of Australia (PBA) before commencing the program.

Obtaining provisional registration can be a lengthy process. The University will assist students as far as possible with their application to the Board.

Under the National Law, students must obtain provisional registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia before they commence their program of study, and for the duration of the program. In the event that the Registration Board refuses an application for provisional registration, the offer of candidature in the program will be rescinded – it is not possible to complete the program without holding provisional registration as a psychologist.

Please note: This system is the same across all Australian Universities. To be able to use the system, you will need to have an active subscription. The subscription allows you access the service during the 2016 – 2017 intake from the 1st of August 2016 to 30th July 2017. The cost is $25.00 and can be paid for through the "My Account" section in the payment tab.

English language proficiency requirements

• Deferring offers is not permitted. Students will need to re-apply for the program in the following year.
• It is not possible to transfer between Forensic and Clinical programs.
• These programs are offered on a full-time basis only.
• Successful candidates must obtain provisional registration from the Psychology Board of Australia before commencement of classes.

The program meets the requirements set out by the Psychology Board of Australia. Graduates will be eligible to apply for full registration after two years of provisional registration. Graduates will be eligible to apply for membership to the Australian Psychological Society (APS).
