About
Human nutrition is the branch of science devoted to the study of food and nutrients.
It examines the effect that food and nutrients have on our physical, social, mental and environmental wellbeing.
At the University of Canberra our emphasis is on the role of nutrition in the maintenance of health and wellbeing in different societies.
You will gain specialist knowledge of the physiological, social, biochemical and epidemiological factors influencing diet-related diseases prevalent in societies today.Work-integrated learning (WIL) is learning first-hand through real work or work-like experiences.
WIL is a key element to enhancing employability in the workplace and is integral to many of our courses.
This reinforces our commitment to preparing professional and highly employable graduates with the right mix of skills and knowledge.Graduates of the Bachelor of Human Nutrition are eligible for registration as an Associate Nutritionist with the Nutrition Society of Australia.

- SM0042 Specialist Major in Nutritional Science (24 credit points) Required - Must pass 21 credit points as follows 6518 - Human Biochemistry - 3 cp, Level 2 6530 - Biochemistry - 3 cp, Level 2 6532 - Human Physiology and the Lifecycle - 3 cp, Level 3 8255 - Nutrition and Disease - 3 cp, Level 3 8257 - Nutritional Science - 3 cp, Level 2 9279 - Introduction to Food Science - 3 cp, Level 1 9280 - Introductory Nutrition - 3 cp, Level 1 Restricted Choice - Must pass 3 credit points from the following 483 - Concepts in Biology - 3 cp, Level 1 8373 - Advanced Physiology - 3 cp, Level 3 Note:From Semester 1 2020 unit 483 Concepts in Biology has been replaced by 8373 Advanced Physiology. Students commencing from 2020 must undertake unit 8373 to complete this major.

- Option 2 - 24 credit points as follows SM0043 Specialist Major in Nutrition Practice (24 credit points) Required - Must pass 18 credit points as follows 8251 - Food Science - 3 cp, Level 2 8253 - Nutrition Across the Lifecycle - 3 cp, Level 3 8259 - Nutrition, Society and Health - 3 cp, Level 3 8580 - Epidemiology and Principles of Research - 3 cp, Level 3 8721 - Sports Nutrition - 3 cp, Level 3 11398 - Introduction to Research in the Health Sciences - 3 cp, Level 1 Restricted Choice - 6 credit points as follows Part A - Must pass 3 credit points from the following 10009 - Health Promotion Principles and Practice - 3 cp, Level 3 10455 - Health Promotion Principles and Practice - 3 cp, Level 1 11399 - Understanding People and Behaviour - 3 cp, Level 1 Note: 1. From Sem 1 2020 unit 11399 Understanding People & Behaviour has been replaced by 10009 Health Promotion Principles & Practice. Students commencing from 2020 must pass 10009 to complete this major. 2. Part B - Must pass 3 credit points from the following 9631 - Food, Health and Environment - 3 cp, Level 3 11577 - Global Nutrition - 3 cp, Level 3 Note:From Sem 1 2020 unit 9631 Food, Health and Environment has been replaced by 11577 Global Nutrition. Students commencing from 2020 must pass 11577 to complete this major. Note:Students who want to register with the Nutrition Society of Australia and/or apply for postgraduate studies in dietetics are recommended to complete the Specialist Major in Nutrition Practice.

A Working With Vulnerable People check is required for Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placements. Some placements also require a police check and an up-to-date vaccination status.
