About
The Graduate Certificate in Nursing (International Registered Nurse Entry) enables you to develop advanced knowledge and skills in order to work as a Registered Nurse in Australia. This course will build on your existing cultural, theoretical, practical and research knowledge.
This course will include 40 hours of on-campus, clinical learning activities. Internal students will complete these hours throughout the term while distance students will undertake a 5-day residential school at the end of the term. You will also complete 240 hours of work-integrated learning after week 12. On successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Nursing (International Registered Nurse Entry), you will be eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Referral by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency is a prerequisite for enrolment into the course.

Students studying part-time must undertake the subjects in the following order: 1. NURS20160, 2. NURS20163, 3. NURS20164.
NURS20160 and NURS20163 may be undertaken at the same time.
NURS20164:
Mixed-mode Students: NURS20164 incorporates a 5-day (40 hours) residential school held on campus at the end of the term.
Internal Students: 40 hours of education in the clinical learning centre will occur on campus throughout the 12 weeks of term.
All students must complete 40 hours of on-campus clinical learning before attending work-integrated learning. If students cannot complete the 40 hours, they must wait until the next term the unit is offered to reattempt the on-campus clinical learning.
Students will complete 240 hours of work-integrated learning in the clinical environment. Please note work-integrated learning will commence after week 12 of the term. Also, there may be a break between week 12 and commencing your work-integrated learning. Student rosters will be at the discretion of the facility, it is expected that students work all shifts types. It is likely that students will be required to travel to attend work-integrated learning.
Students must complete the following three core courses: NURS20160 The Nurse Professional; NURS20163 Australian Identity and Nursing Care; NURS20164 Australian Clinical Nursing Practice.

Entry Requirements
To be eligible to enrol in this course, you must first apply to the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency for registration in Australia (AHPRA). AHPRA will assess your application and determine your eligibility to work as a registered nurse. If you are not found to be immediately eligible for registration you may be referred to an Entry Program for Internationally Qualified Registered Nurses (EPIQ RN). The Graduate Certificate in Nursing (International Registered Nurse Entry) is an EPIQ RN.
Applicants must be referred by the AHPRA/NMBA to undertake an "NMBA-approved bridging program of study". A copy of this referral must be supplied with your application. NMBA/AHPRA referrals have an expiry date. CQUniversity will only accept applicants who are able to complete the requirements of the course prior to the expiry date. Students are responsible for ensuring they have sufficient time to complete the course (including work-integrated learning).
AHPRA requires an academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or equivalent, with a minimum achievement of 7.0 across all bands. For more information please see: http://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au/Registration-Standards/English-language-skills.aspx
Domestic students from non-English speaking backgrounds may be required to undertake an academic IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum achievement of 7 across all bands and overall prior to undertaking work-integrated learning. This is in order to meet Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council standard 5.6. At the discretion of the Head of Course, students may be referred to an internal English short course at their own expense. This is in order to meet Australia Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council standard 2.2.

Mandatory Reporting obligations to AHPRA
CQUniversity is required, under the National Law, to register students with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. CQUniversity has an obligation to make a mandatory complaint or raise a concern about a student to the Australian Health Practioner Regulation Agency if the student has an impairment or health issue that may, either in the course of study or clinical training, place the public at substantial risk of harm.
Notifiable conduct by registered health practitioners (including students) is defined as:
- practising while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs
- sexual misconduct in the practice of the profession
- placing the public at risk of substantial harm because of an impairment (health issue), or
- placing the public at risk because of a significant departure from accepted professional standards.
Raising a Concern or Complaint to AHPRA
- a practitioner's behaviour is placing the public at risk
- a practitioner is practising their profession in an unsafe way,
or
- a practitioner's ability to make safe judgements about their patients might be impaired because of their health.
Assumed Knowledge
This course is tailored to students who wish to complete the course in one term.
- International Student Visa holders must complete all 3 units concurrently as internal students.
- International Student Visa holders must attend the compulsory Orientation Week.
- Internal study will only be available from the Cairns and Rockhampton campuses.
- Students on other visas may complete the course part-time in the following order: NURS20160, NURS20163, NURS20164.
