About
The Graduate Diploma in Dementia Studies focuses on issues surrounding dementia.
It examines complex dementia care concepts that can be immediately applied in practical situations when caring for a person with dementia and their significant others.
It encourages critical investigation into the impact of dementia nationally and globally ensuring that you graduate with advancing knowledge and skills to apply a holistic approach to the care of persons with dementia, regardless of community in which they reside.
This course is aimed at those currently or planning to be working in the health care, welfare sector or area planning to meet the needs of people with dementia.
It is aimed to those who wish to obtain the specialised skills and insight to provide care to clients with dementia and their significant others and/or address issues associated with dementia.
Included in this course you will be introduced to research strategies appropriate to address care, planning and other issues associated with dementia.

1 A completed bachelor degree in any discipline from an Australian university or college or equivalent;
2. A recognised diploma and two years relevant work experience plus recognised prior learning (RPL) involving continuous professional development as evidenced by at least one of the following:
- Significant contribution to industry;
- Promotion in the workplace;
- Recognition by a professional body;
- Community/industry leadership
- Receipt of significant prizes and/or awards;
- Personal references that attest to the applicants high level performance in the workplace/industry/community, or
- Publications/patents/copyright.
- A minimum of five years relevant professional experience with considerable recognised prior learning (RPL) in the discipline area involving continuous professional development as evidenced by at least two or more of the following:
- Significant contribution to industry;
- Promotion in the workplace;
- Recognition by a professional body;
- Community/industry leadership
- Receipt of significant prizes and/or awards;
- Personal references that attest to the applicants high level performance in the workplace/industry/community, or
- Publications/patents/copyright.
If you were not born in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, South Africa or USA you are required to meet the English Language Prerequisite by:
- an academic IELTS (International English Language Testing System) completed within the last 2 years (from the term you are applying to start) with a minimum achievement of 6.5 across all bands and overall; OR
- a secondary or university qualification which is not more than 5 years old (from the term you are applying for entry into) with a satisfactory level of achievement of at least 2 years in duration from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, South Africa or USA.

- Demonstrate critical analysis with the interpretation and application of best practice techniques for meeting complex needs of the person with dementia and their significant others.

- Compare and contrast dementia, delirium and depression including the discussion of complexity surrounding correct diagnosis and interventions.

- Utilise critical thinking, advanced professional communication and collaboration skills appropriate for the work environment and person with dementia that include disseminating knowledge, skills and ideas to specialist and non-specialist stakeholders.

- Interpret and practice appropriate professional and ethical standards demonstrating personal responsibility, accountability and professional judgement in dealing with people with dementia at an advanced professional level.

- Develop research skills to identify appropriate research question, methodology and methods to develop a research plan relevant to the context chosen appropriate to dementia issues.
