About

Associate Degrees prepare students to develop broad knowledge and skills for paraprofessional/highly skilled work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 6 qualifications.

This course provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to further Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination, self-management and well-being. Students undertake a common first year before selecting a major in Indigenous Community Management and Development, Indigenous Community Health or Indigenous Mental Health.

Structure

Associate Degrees typically contains a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. Students can take between 200 to 250 credit points at first year level.

Students study a common first year before selecting their major in second year. Majors are available in Indigenous Community Management and Development, Indigenous Community Health and Indigenous Mental Health. For the first two years, students enrol in the same units as the Bachelor of Applied Science (Indigenous Professional Practices).

Entry requirements

Applicants for an Associate Degree are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://study.curtin.edu.au/ and include flexible entry pathways. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.

Education, personal and work experience, existing skills, community, family and employer support, and other evidence are evaluated in an assessment process which takes place at regional centres towards the end of each year. It is preferable that prospective students be working, or prepared to undertake voluntary work, in an Indigenous Australian health-related position, community management and development or similar community work.

Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences.
