B-DESIGN v.3 Bachelor of Design

Curtin University

About

Bachelor Degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in a discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications.

This course offers students the opportunity to study one Design discipline from a range of majors and at least one Design minor. Additionally, students have the option of choosing a second minor from a selection of recommended minors or choosing a selection of units from throughout the university. The first year of the course enables students to choose foundation units suitable to their desired minor area(s) of study and also begin study in their chosen major.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials.

Structure

Bachelor Degrees typically contain a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may contain a range of majors, streams and/or minors/specialisations for students to choose from to pursue learning in a specialised area of study. Students can take no more than 250 credit points of first year level units.

Students must study one Design major and at least one Design specialisation. If you have interests outside the field of design, you may choose elective units or a second specialisation in a complementary study area such as business, arts or languages to gain a wider skill set.

Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply discipline knowledge to critically review, analyse, consolidate and contribute to evidence-based practice in their chosen design discipline

2. demonstrate cognitive and technical skills in both a broad understanding of design and with depth in at least one discipline

3. use and discern between a range of design technologies and media platforms in the production of design-based solutions

4. demonstrate effective visual, spoken, written and technical communication appropriate to their chosen design discipline and apply effective self-directed learning skills

5. demonstrate personal awareness of a design specific practice and sustain an engagement with contemporary practices, technologies and the creative industries

6. develop a predictive overview of future trends that will influence design and design practices

7. recognise the importance of social, ethical and cultural diversity and consider local and international perspectives in design activities, studio practice and production

8. demonstrate how intercultural awareness and understanding impacts on personal and professional skills and on the ability to lead
