About

Bachelor Degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in a discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications.

This course provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to further Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination, self-management and well-being. Students undertake a common first year before selecting a major in Indigenous Community Management and Development, Indigenous Community Health or Indigenous Mental Health.

Structure

Bachelor Degrees typically contain a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may contain a range of majors, streams and/or minors/specialisations for students to choose from to pursue learning in a specialised area of study. Students can take no more than 250 credit points of first year level units.

Students study a common first year before selecting their major in second year. Majors are available in Indigenous Community Management and Development, Indigenous Community Health and Indigenous Mental Health. For the first two years, students enrol in the same units as the Associate Degree in Indigenous Professional Practices.

Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply, demonstrate and compile academic knowledge and principles in a variety of contexts to promote self-directed and independent learning

2. think critically and creatively to generate solutions in an academic environment; apply logical processes in problem solving

3. access, evaluate, synthesise information from multiple sources in order to make valid judgements

4. communicate effectively with consideration of audience and purpose, demonstrating respect for others and cultural awareness

5. use technology appropriately to develop research skills, access resources and to communicate effectively to a wide community

6. be self-motivated and take responsibility for one's own learning; develop life-long learning skills to source new and relevant information

7. consider global and cultural issues from a variety of perspectives

8. demonstrate respect for cultural diversity within Indigenous Australia, the wider community and University environment; respect and promote cultural diversity

9. work ethically and professionally both within a team and independently; develop a positive sense of Indigenous identity to empower others in the wider community

Duration and Availability

The course is three years full-time study. Compulsory study block releases, four blocks per year, are conducted at Bentley campus. Study blocks may also be held at other locations depending upon student numbers and available funds.

Entry requirements

Applicants for a Bachelor Degree are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://study.curtin.edu.au/ and include flexible entry pathways. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.

Available only to applicants of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Entry requirements include successful completion of the Curtin Aboriginal Bridging Course, the Associate Degree in Indigenous Professional Practices or other relevant qualifications. It is preferable that prospective students be working or prepared to undertake voluntary work in an Aboriginal health-related position or Aboriginal community management and development related position.

Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Credit for recognised learning may be awarded following completion of the Associate Degree in Indigenous Professional Practices or other relevant qualifications.

Intermediate Awards

A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course:
