Bachelor Degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in a discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications.

It takes a particular sort of person to become an Ambulance Paramedic. They put themselves in the front-line of medical care every day making life-changing decisions. Their role is to respond to emergency calls from the public, assisting pre-hospital care. This creative, innovative degree addresses the changing healthcare environment, with an interprofessional health education focus and specialised fieldwork experience. The first year of the degree is undertaken within the Health Sciences interprofessional first year structure. Clinical laboratories will be delivered by the St John Western Australia College of Pre-Hospital Care. To complete the three-year program, you must meet all academic and on-road practical requirements and maintain employment with St John Western Australia as an ambulance officer. You will graduate with a degree and on successful completion of a final transitional period with St John will become a St John Ambulance paramedic. This program is not available to international onshore students studying on student visas.

Structure

Bachelor Degrees typically contain a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may contain a range of majors, streams and/or minors for students to choose from to pursue learning in a specialised area of study.

As part of the first year units students will study Preparation for Paramedicine Clinical Practice.

Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. demonstrate accountable, safe, effective and innovative paramedic practice incorporating research evidence and related professional competences

2. use reflective, evidence based and problem solving approaches to the provision of paramedicine practice

3. access, critically evaluate and utilise health care information in the assessment and management of pre-hospital patients and groups

4. communicate effectively with clients, families, communities and other health professionals in the pre-hospital and primary health contexts

5. use technologies that assist the paramedic to provide quality patient care within a changing health care environment

6. be an independent, self-directed learner who constructively reflects upon the health, social and educational experiences gained through experience and further education and research

7. incorporate regional, national, and global trends and innovations in health care into paramedic practice

8. incorporate social, economic and cultural differences in the provision of culturally appropriate and sensitive care to clients in a pre-hospital or primary health setting

9. demonstrate ethical practice in accordance with legislation, professional capabilities for registered paramedics and professional codes of conduct.

Duration and Availability

The course is three years' full-time study. Bentley campus offers one intake a year in February.

Entry requirements

Prior to enrolling in this degree at Curtin University you will need to be successful in gaining a place as a St John Western Australia Pre-employment Student Ambulance Officer. To be successful in the St John Western Australia Recruitment process you will need to meet academic, personal and physical requirements. More information can be found at stjohnchangelives.com.au. No prior study in a particular subject is required. Applicants must meet the University’s standard entry requirements, which include academic and English competency. A letter outlining your pre-selection into the Student Ambulance Officer program from St John Western Australia will need to be provided. Curtin University requires all students to demonstrate competency in English with an IELTS of 7.0 across all bands (or equivalent).

Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Specific Course Completion Details

To be eligible to complete the degree program students must maintain employment with St John Western Australia as an Ambulance Officer. Upon the successful completion of all academic and on-road practical requirements you will graduate as a degree qualified St John Western Australia Paramedic.
