About
Bachelor Double Degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in more than one discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications.
This double degree provides students with an integrated education program in both exploration/applied geology and commerce. It provides dual qualifications in these areas and develops graduates with unique opportunities to obtain employment in resource development and related fields involving natural resource management. The Bachelor of Commerce places an emphasis on decision-making, trends in technology and associated work patterns and other aspects of management in a highly competitive business arena. The programs emphasise both theoretical concepts and the application of knowledge to commerce and industry. The finance major includes corporate finance, financial institutions and financial markets and is relevant to many aspects of resource development projects carried out by exploration companies.
Professional Recognition
Graduates of the undergraduate degree in Applied Geology are eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists, the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Geological Society of Australia. The BSc (Applied Geology) is recognised by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
Career Opportunities
Graduates may find employment opportunities in the fields of mineral exploration and environmental management to which they will bring both technical and relevant business skills.
Additional Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials. Students may be required to pay for additional expenses whilst on fieldwork/clinical placements.
Structure
Bachelor Double Degrees include a combined degree study program leading to two awards. The duration of the double degree may vary among disciplines, but typically requires less time to complete than if the two undergraduate degrees were studied separately. Students can take no more than 250 credit points of first year level units.
Students enrolled in the double degree program may elect to transfer to a single degree course in one of the two disciplines. In this event, the relevant Head of School/Department shall determine the amount of credit to be transferred to the single degree.
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. apply fundamental geological and financial principles and concepts in theoretical, practical and financial market situations
2. use logical scientific methods and creative thinking to solve geological and capital market problems
3. synthesise geological and empirical data and conceptual information to analyse and interpret geological and financial issues
4. communicate geological and financial information concisely and accurately using written, visual, and verbal means appropriate to the situation
5. employ new and established technologies to collect and interpret geological and financial data, recognising their strengths and limitations
6. demonstrate initiative, responsibility and lifelong learning skills by applying critical reflection and active participation in acquiring geological and financial knowledge and expertise
7. appreciate international perspectives on geoscience and in business communities and recognise the importance of global standards for collecting and reporting data
8. recognise the need for sustainable use of earth resources, and value environmental, indigenous and other community perspectives on geological activities and in a commercial context
9. work ethically and professionally, both independently and as part of a team, complying with applicable legislation and managing time and other resources efficiently and effectively
