EN-INDPBE v.2 Indigenous Pre-Business and Law Enabling Course

This one year Indigenous Pre-Business and Law Enabling Course introduces Indigenous Australian students to fundamental and significant knowledge and practices in business, commerce, and law. This course will enable students to prepare for tertiary studies in undergraduate courses, and build on existing knowledge and experiences that enhance life long learning. Upon successful completion of first semester students will then select the Business or Law pathway. Students who have successfully completed the Pre-Law pathway are eligible to apply for direct entry into the Bachelor of Laws (B-LAWS) or the Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Commerce Double Degree (BB-LAWCOM). Students who have successfully completed the Pre-Business pathway are eligible to apply for direct entry into the Bachelor of Commerce (B-COMRCE)/Bachelor of Business Administration (B-BUSADM) or other Curtin equivalent award degrees.

The Indigenous Pre-Business and Law Enabling course will provide a pathway into undergraduate business, law or equivalent courses at Curtin University which will unlock a range of career opportunities for Indigenous students.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials.

Units within the Indigenous Pre-Business and Law Enabling course are taught generally within the Centre for Aboriginal Studies at Curtin University. The course is taught in collaboration with the Faculty of Business and Law and the Centre for Aboriginal Studies.

Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. develop, apply and demonstrate English language and communication skills including Academic Integrity, study skills, research and presentation

2. develop knowledge and respect of Aboriginal practices and protocols to work effectively in partnership within diverse cultural contexts

3. consolidate and sustain a positive sense of Indigenous identity to introduce, develop and sustain leadership skills and to empower Indigenous students within the academic environment

4. develop academic business knowledge and practice to work effectively in an academic and business environment

5. apply development of Indigenous Identity and academic knowledge within the context of national and international standards and practices in business

6. develop and demonstrate critical and creative thinking skills to generate solutions and apply logical processes in problem solving that contribute to personal development and lifelong learning

7. develop a level of technological understanding and information skills to undertake research, access resources and communicate and work effectively

8. understand and apply management theory and ethical practice to solutions and situations in management

9. develop effective communication skills in various contexts with consideration of audience and purpose, demonstrating respect for others and cultural awareness

Duration and Availability

This course is one year full-time study.

Applicants for an Enabling Course are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://study.curtin.edu.au/ and include flexible entry pathways. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.

This course is open only to Indigenous Australian students. Applicants apply with an expression of interest to the Centre for Aboriginal Studies. Applicants are then required to undertake an assessment test and interview through the Centre for Aboriginal Studies at a time nominated by the Centre for Aboriginal Studies. Applicants are advised to provide any academic transcripts or training documents on application. Students who successfully complete the Indigenous Pre-Business Enabling course with an acceptable ATAR score for their preferred business undergraduate course will be eligible to apply for entry into these courses. A minimum ATAR score of 70 is required for entry into business undergraduates courses.

Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for Credit for Recognised Learning are not considered within this course.

Students who successfully complete the Indigenous Pre-Business and Law Enabling course will be provided with Credit for Recognised Learning up to the value of 50 credits into their undergraduate Bachelor Degree. Students will be required to pass all four units in the first semester before being able to undertake the undergraduate units in the second semester of the course.
