Graduate Certificates prepare students to develop advanced knowledge and skills for professional or highly skilled work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 8 qualifications.

This course is tailored to give students a firm grounding in the basics of business theory and practice and is designed as a possible entry point to further postgraduate study or as a challenging stand-alone course. Upon completion, students are encouraged to continue their studies in either the Graduate Diploma in Business or Master of Business Administration.

Structure

Graduate Certificates contain a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences.

Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. have a thorough foundation of contemporary business theories, concepts and principles and be able to apply these in a group or organisational environment.

2. create and critically evaluate innovative ideas and strategies within ambiguous and uncertain business environments (which includes business, government and not-for-profit).

3. access, evaluate and synthesise diverse information for intelligent business application.

4. effectively communicate in a manner appropriate to their audience and their desired outcomes.

Duration and Availability

This course is 0.5 years full-time or equivalent part-time study. Depending on unit selection, the course can be completed fully online. International students on student visas are not permitted to study fully online. Some specialisations in this course are not available at all campus locations and to international students studying in Australia. Please refer to information provided for individual specialisations.

Entry requirements

Applicants for a Graduate Certificate are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://study.curtin.edu.au/. Applicants generally require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent credit gained for recognised learning. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.

Specifically, for entry into the Graduate Certificate of Business applicants require a bachelor degree from a recognized tertiary institution and at least five years work experience at least three years of which must be at a managerial, supervisory and/or senior professional level OR; entry without an undergraduate degree, eight years of experience with at least five years of managerial, supervisory and/or professional experience. Graduates from the Curtin Graduate Certificate in Business with a CWA of at least 70% will be considered as qualified for entry into the MBA. Applicants for the Graduate Certificate are also required to meet University academic and English language entry standards (IELTS requirement of 6.5 overall [with no individual band less than 6]). Entry to the course is competitive and applicants will be required to undertake an interview as the final stage of application assessment.

Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Credit for recognised learning is not available for the Graduate Certificate in Business. Students may be offered waivers for certain units under specific circumstances but must select other approved units as a substitute.

This course is an exit award of the following: MM-MECBAD Master of Science (Mineral and Energy Economics), Master of Business Administration, MC-BUSADM Master of Business Administration, MC-MERGEC Master of Science (Mineral and Energy Economics), and the GD-BUSI Graduate Diploma in Business.

The course requires completion of 10 hours of professional development.
