GC-ISYSTC v.1 Graduate Certificate in Information Systems and Technology

Graduate Certificates prepare students to develop advanced knowledge and skills for professional or highly skilled work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 8 qualifications.

This course is designed for students who already hold a degree but have no computing background or those students with extensive business management or supervisory experience without a first degree. The graduate certificate will assist students who need to acquire skills and knowledge in the planning and development of information systems in organisations. The course is of a practical nature, which will assist students to consolidate their learning by applying their knowledge and skills in the business environment.

Graduate Certificates contain a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences.

This course consists of four units of study. The areas studied include: systems analysis and design, introduction to programming, database systems and technical infrastructure.

Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply information systems and knowledge management principles to support business operations by providing an appropriate technological base and managing an effective information systems body

2. apply systems theory and systems development techniques to develop systems appropriate to a range of business organisations

3. conduct information requirements determination, recommend appropriate solutions, manage and participate in their implementation using a range of system development tools, platforms, languages and environments

4. able to effectively communicate information and system requirements, policies and procedures, system designs, specifications and implementation details

5. manage and implement appropriate information systems that provide a suitable technological base to suit a range of business organisations

6. ability to see the business potential of new technologies as they emerge.Ability to appreciate, and apply where appropriate, the philosophies behind new methodological approaches as they emerge

9. apply professional skills to ensure ethical practices in areas including but not limited to privacy and information security, employ best practice techniques for the design, management and operation of information systems and information technology organisations

The course is one semester full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Applicants for a Graduate Certificate are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://study.curtin.edu.au/. Applicants generally require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent credit gained for recognised learning. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.

An undergraduate degree in a non-related discipline OR a minimum of 5 years relevant workplace learning.

Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for Credit for Recognised Learning are not considered within this course.
