Graduate Certificates prepare students to develop advanced knowledge and skills for professional or highly skilled work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 8 qualifications.
The Graduate Certificate in Paramedicine is a collaborative program offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery in conjunction with St John Ambulance Association, Western Australia. This course is designed to provide registered nurses with the appropriate knowledge and skills to become ambulance paramedics. The course includes an extensive internship with the St John Ambulance Association.

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials.
Structure
Graduate Certificates contain a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences.
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. apply paramedicine knowledge principles and concepts in accordance with relevant practice codes, standards and legislation
2. apply critical thinking and reflective practice to paramedicine practice to generate innovative solutions; recognise own abilities and level of professional competence
3. access, evaluate and synthesise information relevant to paramedicine nursing and the promotion of optimal outcomes for clients
4. communicate effectively and work collaboratively with clients, carers, families, communities and the interdisciplinary healthcare team; utilise appropriate methods of communicating information within a legal and ethical framework
5. utilise technology safely and appropriately for the diagnosis and management of clients; manage resources to optimise delivery of care
6. critically appraise research relevant to paramedic practice and incorporate evidence based knowledge; demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning, thorough critical reflection and self-monitoring
7. incorporate relevant international best practice standards / evidence into paramedicine practice; recognise key issues in international specialty practice
8. articulate and demonstrate respect for individuals' rights to determine their own journey through episodes of life
9. demonstrate professional, legal and ethical accountability within the scope of paramedicine practice for safe health care delivery

* This course is not available to International Onshore Students on Student Visas. This course is only available to Domestic Fee Paying students on a Part-Time basis.
Entry requirements
Applicants for a Graduate Certificate are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://study.curtin.edu.au/. Applicants generally require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent credit gained for recognised learning. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
Specifically, applicants require a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) or equivalent or a hospital-based diploma and registration as a comprehensive or general nurse with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Applicants must have at least 24 months’ experience in an acute area of practice. The following clearances are required before applying for this course: Criminal record screening and clearance, Communicable diseases, Working with children, Current WA driver's license. All prospective applicants will be subject to an interview and selection process with St John Ambulance Association and Curtin University.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences.
