Graduate Diplomas prepare students to develop advanced knowledge and skills for professional or highly skilled work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 8 qualifications.

This course is designed for graduates interested in the promotion of human health and welfare who wish to gain the professional skills associated with the identification, assessment, evaluation and control of environmental hazards. The course provides opportunities for professionals in environmental health, health and safety, environmental protection, health promotion and related professions to acquire knowledge and develop skills appropriate to the management of environmental health protection and safety in public, commercial, industrial and voluntary organisations. It also expands the knowledge and skills base of public health specialists and other graduates of science and related disciplines, enabling them to successfully adapt to the changing environmental health needs of communities. All students will be required to undertake an academic skills module at the commencement of the course.

This course is fully accredited by Environmental Health Australia and also the Western Australian Environmental Health Officers Professional Review Board.

Structure

Graduate Diplomas contain a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from to pursue learning in a specialised area of study.

The Graduate Diploma in Environmental Health contains 8 core units. There are no optional units or electives offered. The course contains a practicum unit that requires 100 hours of work experience in an Environmental Health workplace.

Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

Applicants for a Graduate Diploma are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://study.curtin.edu.au/. Applicants generally require a Bachelor Degree or Graduate Certificate. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.

The Environmental Health Australia Accreditation Framework stipulates that applicants are required to have at least one full-time semester in core science subjects such as chemistry, physics, biology, anatomy and physiology, life science and microbiology. Graduates without these core units, or graduates with a degree from other disciplines, may be admitted following successful completion of prescribed units.
