MJRH-CHENG v.2 Chemical Engineering Major (BEng Hons)
Curtin University
About
This major/stream is part of a larger course. Information is specific to the major/stream, please refer to the course for more information.
Chemical or Process engineering involves finding the best sequence of physical, chemical and biological processing steps, and the right operating conditions, to convert raw materials into higher value products safely, economically and on a large scale. Gas processing, oil refining, minerals processing and metals production are among the most commonly recognised applications of chemical engineering, but the discipline encompasses a diversity of products that serve the needs of society. These include LNG, LPG, petrochemicals and polymers, fertilisers and agrichemicals, cement and lime, industrial and fine chemicals, paper and board, consumer products, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology products, food and beverages, power and clean water. Students can select either the general Chemical Engineering Stream or the specialised Oil and Gas Stream.
Professional Recognition
Engineers Australia and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) recognise the course as fulfilling the academic requirements for graduate membership. On obtaining the necessary experience graduates will be eligible for corporate membership of Engineers Australia and IChemE.
Course Accreditation Status
This major is accredited by Engineers Australia and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE).
Structure
Major/Stream Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. apply scientific and engineering principles to process engineering design and development, including sound risk management, environmental and OHS practice
2. think critically and creatively to generate innovative and optimum solutions
3. identify, evaluate and synthesise information from a range of sources to optimise process engineering design and development
4. communicate effectively in ways appropriate to the discipline, audience and purpose
5. use appropriate information and process technologies (recognising their advantages and limitations) in the design and development of sustainable process systems
6. engage in continuous education, training and research, and take control of their own learning and development
7. recognise and apply international standards and best practice in process engineering
8. demonstrate respect for cultural diversity
9. be ‘career ready’ for the process engineering profession, demonstrate leadership qualities, and work ethically and professionally both within a team and independently
Duration and Availability
This major is available to international students studying in Australia on a study visa. There are two intakes each year, in Semester 1 and Semester 2.
