Curtin University

About

This major/stream is part of a larger course. Information is specific to the major/stream, please refer to the course for more information.

The Applied Geology Honours Major (BSc) (Honours) enables students to extend knowledge of current academic research methodology as it is applied in the field of geology, and to demonstrate this through undertaking a supervised research project and the preparation of an honours dissertation.

Career Opportunities

Honours graduates have demonstrated an ability to work independently, to plan and implement a scientific investigation, to meet project deadlines, and to communicate information to a professional standard. For this reason, many employers of geology professionals have a preference for honours graduates.

Structure

This Major consists of coursework units in professional practice, geoscience analytical techniques and/or petroleum geophysics and a combination of two Geoscience Honours Dissertation units.

Major/Stream Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply fundamental geological principles and concepts as part of a scientific investigation

2. investigate a geological problem using logical scientific methods and creative thinking

3. collect and synthesise multiple geological data sets to make interpretations that account for scientific uncertainty

4. communicate geological information to an informed professional audience, using written, visual and verbal means appropriate to the situation

5. employ appropriate technologies to collect and interpret geological data as part of a scientific investigation, recognising their strengths and limitations

6. acquire new geological knowledge and expertise independently from a range of sources and professional situations

7. collect and report geological data using national and international standards and conventions
