The Mathematical Sciences Honours Major (BSc) (Honours) enables students to extend their knowledge of current academic research methodology in the fundamental and applied areas of mathematics and statistics. This will be demonstrated through studying specialised units and the conduct of a supervised research project and presentation of an honours dissertation.
Professional Recognition
Graduates of this Major may be eligible for membership in the Statistical Society of Australia (SSAI), Operations Research Society of Australia, and/or Australian Mathematical Society (Aust MS).
Career Opportunities
Honours graduates have demonstrated an ability to work independently, to plan and implement a scientific investigation, to meet project deadlines, and to communicate information to a professional standard. For this reason, many employers of mathematicians and statistics professionals have a preference for honours graduates, and some employers will only consider graduates with an honours degree.

Major/Stream Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. understand and apply mathematical and statistical principles and concepts in a mathematical discipline such as operations research, statistics, numerical analysis or applied mathematical modelling, and to solve problems relevant to industry, commerce and government
2. apply the principles of current academic research methodology in the fundamental and applied areas of mathematics and statistics as demonstrated through studying specialised units and the conduct of a supervised research project and presentation of an honours dissertation
3. locate, extract, critically appraise and present relevant evidence in scientific literature in relation to the mathematical sciences to articulate a scientific argument
4. communicate effectively through the written word and by oral presentation to an audience of Mathematical Science professionals
5. use new and established technologies to effectively gather data and information, and articulate the advantages and limitations of each
6. understand the theoretical framework of mathematical science and demonstrate sustained intellectual curiosity by working as a responsible, reflective, self-directed and motivated lifelong learner
7. consider the diversity of international perspectives and apply international standards of practice within their profession as a mathematical scientist
8. understand and respect the breadth of cultural diversity in the mathematical sciences and appreciate the positive impacts this has on the field; appreciate the impacts that cultural diversity has on professional practice
9. display professional behaviour both independently and as a team member through the use of ethical and safe work practices
