This major is designed for those intending to pursue careers in the information technology industry. Examples of some careers include: programmers, systems analysts, systems designers, business analysts, and managers of information technology departments or information centres. This major is accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS).

Structure

The combinations being supported are: Bachelor of Commerce Elective Stream; Business Information Systems & Logistics and Supply Chain Management; Business Information Technology & Systems

Major/Stream Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply information technology principles in a business setting to support business operations by providing an appropriate and effective technological base

2. apply system development techniques to develop information systems appropriate to a range of business organisations

3. evaluate and synthesise a range of system development tools, platforms and languages and environments to make appropriate technology adoption decisions

4. able to effectively communicate system requirements and document system designs, specifications and implementation details

5. use of operating systems, network environments, system development tools, programming languages, and other technologies

6. ability to learn how to use new technologies as they emerge; ability to appreciate, and apply where appropriate, the philosophies behind new methodological approaches as they emerge

7. apply communications and collaboration technology to support international organisations; understanding and appreciation of relevant international infrastructure and software development standards

8. develop information systems which are 'user friendly' to a wide range of users; understand the range of potential impacts of information technology on users and design systems, and technologies appropriate to the users

9. apply professional skills to ensure ethical practices in areas including but not limited to privacy and information security; employ best practice techniques for the operation of information systems and information technology organisations.
