Extractive metallurgy is a specialist field that deals with the extraction of metals and mineral products from their ores through the application of scientific principles. Extractive metallurgists play a key role in the mining industry. They are responsible for the development of the best process to treat a particular ore and the efficient operation of the processing plant to convert the ore into metal and other products, as well the disposal of wastes in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. Students with an interest in chemistry and mathematics and the desire to pursue a rewarding career in the mining industry often make a successful extractive metallurgist.

Major/Stream Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply minerals and metallurgical scientific principles to metallurgical process operation

2. think critically and creatively to generate innovative solutions and apply logical an rational processes to analyse minerals and metallurgical technology practice

3. access, evaluate and synthesise minerals and metallurgical information from multiple sources

4. communicate in ways appropriate to the discipline of minerals engineering and metallurgy

5. use and apply technologies, recognising their advantages and limitations, when applied to minerals and metallurgical information

6. demonstrate responsibility and self-learning skills by applying critical reflection and being proactive

7. describe and apply international best practice standards in minerals engineering and metallurgical methods and technologies
