This General English course develops students' confidence in using English when living, studying or working in an English-speaking environment. Students should choose this course if they would like the enjoyment and stimulation of improving their English in a modern university environment. General English is offered at B2 level on the Common European Framework, also known as Vantage. It is an upper-intermediate course; Students will enter this program based on an assessment of their current English ability. This is achieved by taking our placement test, providing English language proficiency results upon application or by their performance in an English program with an approved partner provider whose assessments are moderated by Curtin English. A graduate of this course can: develop English language and English language writing skills appropriate for producing texts at the required level of proficiency, manipulate grammatical structures to communicate effectively at the required level of proficiency, demonstrate independent learning through reflection and active learning techniques, distinguish between main and supporting ideas in a spoken or written text at the required level of proficiency, produce spoken utterances and interactions at the required level of proficiency, negotiate meaning with other users of English at the required level of proficiency. The required level of proficiency will vary depending upon the language requirements of their next course of study.

Course Overview Note

This course develops English Language Proficiency of learners at Common European Framework, Level B2 comprising the development of receptive and productive skills and the use of English language. Learners are supported to develop their ability to use grammatical structures accurately and appropriately, to broaden their range of vocabulary and functional language, and to develop their productive skills of speaking and writing as well as their receptive skills of reading and listening. The course prepares learners to use English language with a certain level of proficiency in a work, life and study context.

Structure

The course is at B2 level, which covers an approximate equivalent to IELTS 5 to 6.5. It is modular and task-based. Based on their entry level and their required exit level students will take a recommended number of modules to complete the course. A module comprises of one weeks work. Completion of 12 modules is expected to lead to progress of half an IELTS band overall. Each module consists of 20 hours of study.

Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. develop English language and English language writing skills appropriate for producing texts at the required level of proficiency

2. manipulate grammatical structures to communicate effectively at the required level of proficiency

3. produce spoken utterances and interactions at the required level of proficiency

4. demonstrate independent learning through reflection and active learning techniques

5. distinguish between main and supporting ideas in a spoken or written text at the required level of proficiency

6. negotiate meaning with other users of English at the required level of proficiency

Duration and Availability

The course has eight entry points per year and takes a recommended length of time to complete. The recommended time will depend upon the students' starting level of English and their target level and will usually be 6, 12, 18 or 24 weeks. Actual time taken to complete the course depends on how quickly students achieve the level of language proficiency they require, but would rarely be more than 30 weeks.
