Psycholoy (Advanced)

The Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Advanced) is a 36 unit program offered by the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work on a full fee-paying basis.

It is normally completed in 2 semesters full-time or 4 semesters part-time.This degree does not meet the requirements for admission into a PhD or the Master of Psychology (Clinical).The Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Advanced) provides a 4th year qualification in Psychology that is structured to meet the accreditation standards of the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council.Psychology is the science of human behaviour.

Therefore, it informs our understanding of a wide range of individual, cultural, and community issues, and underpins strategies to promote both mental and physical health, and success in interpersonal, environmental, and occupational domains.

The Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Advanced) provides advanced tuition in theoretical and practical aspects of applied psychology, including assessment and interventions, ethics, and research methodology.

The course may provide skills that are useful in a range of vocations or lead to additional job opportunities.

To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Advanced), a student must complete 36 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the program of study below.

Not all topics necessarily are available in a given year.

Core - Year 1 topics

36 units comprising:

PSYC8001 Topics in Psychology (4.5 units) PSYC8002 Professional Skills (4.5 units) PSYC8003 Diverse Applications (4.5 units) PSYC8004 Assessment and Intervention (4.5 units) PSYC8005 Advanced Research Methodology (4.5 units) PSYC8000A Research Project A (4.5/13.5 units) PSYC8000B Research Project B (9/13.5 units)

Applicants must have completed a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification, within the last 10 years at time of application for the course, with a psychology major that is either (a) accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), or (b) has been assessed as equivalent to an APAC-accredited psychology major by the Australian Psychological Society.

Applicants must normally have achieved a Grade Point Average of 5.00 or above for second and third year psychology topics and a third year research methodology topic. Selection will be based on academic merit.

International applicants must satisfy English Language Proficiency requirements with an IELTS score of 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each band or equivalent.

On completion of this course students will be able to:

• Explain the link between knowledge, theory, research, and psychological practice
• Understand and evaluate psychological research, and conduct and report an independent study using appropriate methods and data analysis techniques
• Demonstrate basic assessment strategies in situations relevant to psychological practice, and knowledge of psychometric theory and principles of the construction, cultural considerations, implementation and interpretation of some common psychological measures
• Demonstrate relevant interpersonal communication, interviewing and counselling skills
• Explain how basic psychological interventions can be applied across a broad range of contexts.
