A working knowledge of diabetes, prevention and management of the disease is becoming increasingly important for health professionals in Australia and around the world, such is the prevalence of the disease.Graduates can work in a variety of government, private health, hospital and community settings, offering client-centred and evidenced-based clinical care and self-management education programs.

Expand your expertise or open the door to new careers in diabetes management and prevention.This course will enhance professional development and independent practice but cannot lead to recognition as a credentialed diabetes educator.

Entry requirements

Course pre-requisites Completion of an AQF level 7 health-related bachelor degree or a bachelor degree in nursing or other relevant clinically-based health or allied health qualifications from another country (or qualifications recognised by the Division as equivalent), and At least 12 months experience working in their chosen field since undergraduate course completion; or At least five years’ experience in a health profession
Minimum English language proficiency requirements Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 3a – Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.
Additional selection requirements Information published by JCU or otherwise made available to students when applying, may specify additional criteria to be considered in ranking applicants in order of merit if the number of applications exceeds a quota or other limit on the places made available for the course. Information provided by applicants during the application process and any other information obtained by JCU in the application process may be used by JCU to rank applicants in order of merit by reference to those additional criteria.

Learning outcomes

The number of people living with diabetes has almost quadrupled in the past 30 years worldwide. About 8.5 per cent of the world’s people currently living with diabetes. In Australia, around 280 people develop the disease every day.

The Graduate Certificate of Diabetes Studies has been developed to equip health professionals with the practical, technical, clinical and organisational skills needed to provide safe and effective client-centred diabetes care.

Graduates will gain the skills to systematically plan, manage, and evaluate diabetes care and diabetes services in a way that supports a contemporary, integrated, and multidisciplinary approach to client care in a variety of practice settings.

The course is mostly delivered online but students are also required to attend a residential block subject in Singapore or Cairns.
