A major aspect of the course also introduces a variety of contemporary analytical techniques and validation of techniques commonly employed by commercial laboratories.

A unique feature of the program is the continuing collaboration between Macquarie University and two authoritative organisations in Australia, The National Measurement Institute and The National Association of Testing Authorities, in developing lecture materials for two core units of study in the program.Read More

Learning outcomes

1. Apply advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and analytical techniques to authentic analytical problems.
2. Develop and validate new techniques and methods of analysis relevant to management and quality assurance in laboratory settings.
3. Plan a validation program by identifying significant factors of a given method of analysis, and estimate the uncertainty for a given set of analytical results.
4. Design, implement and manage a Quality Management System for an analytical testing laboratory.
5. Develop a quality control scheme for any given type of measurement relevant to a laboratory setting.
6. Apply appropriate Reference Materials for calibration in analytical validation methods.
7. Appropriately document the essential details of chemical laboratory procedures undertaken, key observations, results and conclusions, and present information with articulate arguments and conclusions, using a variety of modes, to diverse audiences, and for a range of purposes.
8. Explain and critically discuss the importance of chemistry in the local and global community and the essential role that chemistry plays in society as a creative endeavour involved in acquiring and applying knowledge, that underpins industrial, technological and medical advances.
