The physical inherent requirement is to have the physical capabilities to safely and effectively perform the activities necessary to undertake the learning activities and achieve the learning outcomes of an award.

The inherent requirement for cognition is possessing the intellectual, conceptual, integrative and quantitative capabilities to undertake the learning activities and achieve the learning outcomes of an award.

The inherent requirement for communication is the capacity to communicate information, thoughts and ideas through a variety of mediums and with a range of audiences.

The behavioural inherent requirement is the capacity to sustain appropriate behaviour over the duration of units of study to engage in activities necessary to undertake the learning activities and achieve the learning outcomes of an award.

Learning outcomes

1. Articulate the complex roles that language and discourse play in human interactions in a range of professional and social contexts.
2. Apply advanced theoretical and technical linguistic knowledge in order to formulate creative solutions to authentic communication problems.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of cultural influences on communication patterns and critically analyse examples of cross-cultural miscommunication.
4. Critically evaluate bodies of research literature in the fields of applied linguistics and language education.
5. Creatively design or adjust a second or foreign language curriculum in line with current evidence-based practice.
6. Appraise language teaching materials, techniques and approaches with reference to language learning theories, learning context, and learner goals.
7. Select or design language assessment tasks or tests that are appropriate to the purpose of the assessment, in line with current research-based practice.
8. Analyse, discuss and explain to both professional and general audiences the ways in which spoken and written language is influenced by the specific context and purpose of the communicative event.
