The Graduate Diploma in Journalism (Advanced) is part of a suite of courses associated with the Master of Journalism.

The Graduate Diploma in Journalism (Advanced) is comprised of three compulsory subjects, totalling 50 points, together with a list of journalism-related electives (50 points).

Together these represent basic journalistic skills and understandings, with the opportunity to study select advanced subjects.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

1. In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have completed:

  • an undergraduate degree in a cognate discipline with a weighted average mark of at least H2B (70%) in appropriate subjects or equivalent.

Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection.

2. In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider:

  • prior academic performance; and
  • relevance of previous studies.

3. The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Academic Board rules on the use of selection instruments.

4. Applicants are required to satisfy the university’s English language requirements for graduate courses. For those applicants seeking to meet these requirements by one of the standard tests approved by the Academic Board, performance band 7.0 is required.

Students who complete the Graduate Diploma in Journalism (Advanced) should:

  • demonstrate high level oral and written communication skills
  • demonstrate high level expertise in researching, writing and editing their own work
  • demonstrate an ability to apply high level research skills to investigate news stories
  • demonstrate an advanced and practical understanding of how news stories are put together;
  • be equipped to critically reflect on writing challenges that journalists face across different media;
  • demonstrate the ability to reflect on professional issues and develop new and innovative forms of practice; and
  • demonstrate an ability to apply theoretical concepts to journalistic practice.
