This highly relevant double degree is your stepping stone to a global career in the field of creative and cultural arts.Co-located with the nationally significant Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA), you’ll work with some of Australia’s most successful artists, art theorists and cultural commentators.With our Bachelor of Arts you can choose from 40 different major and minor areas of study, including languages, social studies, communications, politics, human rights, and international relations to develop an informed, critical awareness of the fields you're most passionate about.

The Bachelor of Arts is a comprehensive course. In the double degree course you complete:

A. Arts specified study

This will expose you to several Arts disciplines areas of study contributing breadth to your knowledge of the arts, humanities and social sciences. It will also give you the opportunity to learn about several areas of study before finalising your choice of major and minor.

B. Arts listed major

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in one Faculty of Arts listed major area of study. You will learn to critically analyse, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the area of study.

The Bachelor of Fine Art is a specialist course that develops through theme studies in history and theory, drawing, and fine art knowledge and practice. In the Art history and curating specialisation, these will come together through an internship and a final research project. In the Fine Art specialisations these will come together in the form of a graduand exhibition normally developed during the final two studio units in the third year of the course.

A. History and theory studies

History and theory units will equip you with the skills necessary to research fine art issues and provide the research methods relevant to your studio or workshop practice. They will enable you to contextualise your own practice and communicate ideas and strategies. Through the prism of history, as well as reference to bodies of knowledge relevant to cultural production, you will begin to situate the place of Fine art in society.

B. Drawing foundation

This will assist you to develop the perceptual, practical and intellectual skills required by art, design and architecture students in the discipline of drawing.

C. Fine art knowledge and practice

Through this component of the course you will develop key skills and concepts particular to your Fine Art specialisation. Through lectures and seminars, studios or practice driven workshops, you will develop the capacity for independent cultural production within Fine Art and related fields. Interdisciplinary skills and understanding will be explored, as well as critical thinking.

Students specialising in Art history and curating will have the opportunity to interact with topics and students from a range of relevant fields in the Arts.

Students specialising in Fine Art will engage with and integrate specific professional fields from related areas into their practice.

VET Study

VET Diploma graduates: To be considered, applicants who have completed VCE or its equivalent and who are applying with a Humanities or Social Science based diploma will require an average result of at least 60%. Applicants who have not completed VCE but have completed a Humanities or Social Science based diploma will require an average result of at least 70%. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not meet the admission requirements.

VET Certificate IV graduates: To be considered, applicants who have completed VCE or its equivalent and who are applying with a Humanities or Social Science based Cert IV will require an average result of at least 80%. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not meet the admission requirements. No credit is granted for these studies.

Higher education

University: To be considered on the basis of tertiary study alone, applicants who have completed VCE or equivalent will be required to complete the equivalent of one year (48 credit points) of a recognised university degree and will require an average result of at least 60% (including failed units). For applicants who have completed less than the equivalent of one year of study, both the senior secondary qualification results and the units completed will be considered.

For applicants who do not have any formal qualifications completion of two single units at an Australian higher education or equivalent overseas educational institution satisfy minimum entry requirements, but four units are recommended to be competitive for selection, especially in Humanities or Social Science areas. Applicants should have at least a 60% average in their studies (including failed units). Studies must have been completed within five years of intended commencement.
