Information Technology and Arts

Monash University

About

Information technology is everywhere today, intertwined with the fundamental structures of our society.

Often, though, IT is taken for granted, or else treated as too mysterious to understand. The globalizing nature of the information technology industry calls out for people who have both a strong technical background and an indepth understanding of human society and the factors that are shaping it.This double degree course is designed to meet this need.

As a graduate you will have the technical expertise to shape and manage current and emerging technologies together with the lifelong communication, research and critical thinking skills that are acquired through study in the arts and humanities.

Structure

Double degree courses allow you to study towards two different degrees at the same time, and graduate with two separate qualifications. And because a required subject in one course can count as an elective in the other, our double degrees take two years less than if you studied for the two degrees separately.

The Bachelor of Information Technology is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts. In the double degree course you complete:

A. Information technology specified study

This will provide you with foundation skills and knowledge for your IT education and ensure a breadth of understanding of IT and its applications in organizations and society.

B. Information technology listed major

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one area of Information technology. You will develop the practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in your chosen major needed to successfully plan, develop, implement and evaluate information products and systems.

The Bachelor of Arts is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts. In the double degree course you complete:

A. Arts specified study

This will expose you to several Arts disciplines areas of study contributing breadth to your knowledge of the arts, humanities and social sciences. It will also give you the opportunity to learn about several areas of study before finalising your choice of major and minor.

B. Arts listed major

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in one Faculty of Arts listed major area of study. You will learn to critically analyse, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the area of study.
