Structure

The course is structured in two consecutive parts:

  • Part A. Core master’s studies
  • Part B. Specialist studies

Units are 6 points unless otherwise stated.

Alternative qualifications

You may eligible to exit this course early with a Graduate Certificate of Computer Science, provided you complete the following units: ITO4131, ITO4136, ITO4137 and one other unit from Part A.

Part A. Core master’s studies (36 points)

These studies will provide an orientation and draw on best practices within the broad field of computer science practice and research. You will gain a critical understanding of theoretical and practical issues related to computer science. Your studies will focus on fundamentals, core knowledge as well as application in your chosen specialisation.

Part B. Specialist studies (12 points)

The focus of these studies is specialising in the areas of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity or software engineering.

These course outcomes are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework level 8 and Monash Graduate Attributes.

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

apply problem solving skills and theoretical knowledge to the design and construction of innovative solutions in at least one of the following areas: artificial intelligence, cybersecurity or software engineering;

systematically evaluate the application of theories and techniques from the field of computer science;

assess and apply industry standard tools and techniques for building software systems;

critically evaluate, document and communicate ethical, legal and social issues affecting the use of technologies;

6.

evaluate and respond to social and ethical issues arising from the application of computer science technologies in the global economy;

communicate effectively with stakeholders within and outside the computing industry.
