We are the only Victorian university to offer a Direct Entry medical program for students completing year 12 as well as a Graduate Entry program leading to the same degree – Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (MD)Whichever pathway you take to Medicine at Monash, you will be challenged by a community where the discoveries of our world-renowned researchers are put into clinical practice.

You will have access to the largest healthcare provider network in Australia, which includes the Monash Medical Centre and The Alfred, Melbourne's major casualty hospital.

Structure

The course develops through theme studies in personal and professional development; population, society, health and Illness; scientific basis of clinical practice; and clinical skills, all of which come together in professional practice demonstrated in the clinical placement units.

Theme I: Personal and Professional Development

Theme II: Population, Society, Health and Illness

The focus of these studies is the social, environmental and behavioural contexts of illness and the practice of medicine, especially in rural and remote areas, and broad societal issues such as health promotion, epidemiology, public health, community diversity, population and global health. You will also study the history and philosophy of the scientific approach to medicine, and approaches to knowledge and information, and hence develop a sound understanding of evidence-based medicine.

Theme III: Scientific Basis of Clinical Practice

These studies address human systems, and through them you will develop the knowledge and concepts that underpin both the basic medical sciences and in the clinical sciences.

Theme IV: Clinical Skills

This theme encompasses the whole range of clinical skills and will develop defined clinical competencies. This will begin with clinical aspects of communication skills and move through history taking and physical examinations to the more advanced clinical and procedural skills.

Qualifications

Please Note: This graduate entry program is for those with a completed specified university degree. If you are a school leaver, please consider the five-year Direct Entry course.

Domestic applicants

To be eligible for consideration, you must have (or be in the final year of) one of these Monash University degrees:

  • Bachelor of Biomedical Science (including double degrees) or
  • Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) or
  • Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) or
  • Bachelor of Science with specified units

A minimum weighted average mark of 70 is required for consideration.

70% of places will be reserved for students undertaking Monash’s Bachelor of Biomedical Science. Further places are available to students who have completed all specified Monash University degrees.

International applicants

To be eligible for consideration you must have (or be in the final year of completing) a degree with significant and broad biomedical science content from an internationally recognised university with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 6.0 out of 7.0.
