Entry requirements
Academic entry requirements
A recognised three year bachelor degree (or equivalent) not in a course leading to teacher registration in Australia or New Zealand.
Your first teaching area also has prerequisites that must be met.
Additional entry requirements
You must demonstrate possession of key competencies outlined by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) as those attributes and motivations common to effective teachers.
To demonstrate this, you must complete an online questionnaire to demonstrate your motivation for and understanding of, the course and profession. Details are available from the QTAC initial teacher education webpage.
If you've achieved a 'satisfactory' result for one or more components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) at another institution, the 'satisfactory' result can be carried across with your admission application. You are not eligible to apply for a place in this course if one or more components of LANTITE remains at 'unsatisfactory' after two test attempts for that component.
If you have failed two or more attempts of either component of the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students, and have not passed it in a later attempt, you will not be eligible for entry.
Selection ranks
You will be considered solely on the basis of selection ranks from your prior degree studies plus any postgraduate studies you may have undertaken. Other qualifications and experiences may be allocated selection ranks for entry to other QUT courses but will not be considered for this course.
Prerequisites: first teaching area
For the first teaching area at least three quarters of a year (6 QUT units) of successful full-time recognised degree (or higher) study completed in a major area or equivalent. Completed study can be from different courses.

Assumed knowledge: second teaching area
For the second teaching area at least half a year (4 QUT units) of successful full-time recognised degree (or higher) study in a minor area or equivalent. Completed study can be from different courses.
You must nominate your second teaching area on enrolment.
Your first and second teaching areas must be different.

First teaching area prerequisites
Dance education
Either
- completion of at least three quarters of a year of full-time, degree (or higher) study (6 QUT units) in dance with a minimum of both: one eighth of a year (1 QUT unit) in dance theory; and one eighth of a year (1 QUT unit) in dance practice.
- one of the following completed courses: QUT Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) or equivalent QUT Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance Performance) or equivalent.
Drama education
Either
- completion of at least three quarters of a year of full-time, degree (or higher) study (6 QUT units) in drama with a minimum of both: one eighth of a year (1 QUT unit) in drama theory; and one eighth of a year (1 QUT unit) in drama practice.
- one of the following completed courses: QUT Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drama) or equivalent QUT Bachelor of Fine Arts (Acting) or equivalent.
English education
Completion of at least three quarters of a year of full-time, degree (or higher) study (6 QUT units) covering one or more of:

- film and media studies.
Film and media education
Either
- completion of at least three quarters of a year of full-time, degree (or higher) study (6 QUT units) in film and media with a minimum of both: one eighth of a year (1 QUT unit) in film and media theory; and one eighth of a year (1 QUT unit) in film and media production.
- a completed QUT Bachelor of Fine Arts (Film, TV and New Media Production), QUT Bachelor of Fine Arts (Film, Screen and New Media) or equivalent.
Mathematics education
Either
- completion of at least three quarters of a year of full-time, degree (or higher) study (6 QUT units) in mathematics
- a recognised bachelor degree in: engineering mathematics physics
Music education

- completion of at least three quarters of a year of full-time, degree (or higher) study (6 QUT units) in music

Science education (biology)

Science education (chemistry)
Either
- completion of at least three quarters of a year of full-time, degree (or higher) study (6 QUT units) in chemistry, preferably in: physical chemistry inorganic chemistry bio-organic chemistry analytical and environmental chemistry.
- a recognised bachelor degree in: biochemistry biomedicine chemical engineering forensics medical science pharmacy.
Science education (earth and environmental science)
Either
- completion of at least three quarters of a year of full-time, degree (or higher) study (6 QUT units) covering one or more of:f: earth science; and/or environmental science/engineering; and/or geology; and/or geoscience and ecology; and/or geography.
- a recognised bachelor degree in: earth science environmental science landscape architecture.
Science education (physics)
Either
- completion of at least three quarters of a year of full-time, degree (or higher) study (6 QUT units) in physics and mathematics, with a minimum of half a year (4 QUT units) in physics

As a secondary specialist, you will be prepared to teach in schools with your career guided by, but not limited to, your two teaching areas. Your qualification can also allow you to work in other locations in Australia and overseas.
Professional recognition(DOM,INT)
This course meets professional teaching standards for the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership and Queensland College of Teachers. Graduates are eligible to apply for teacher registration. Applicants seeking teacher registration in Australia may be required to provide evidence of English Language proficiency levels. Early exit(DOM,INT)
If you decide you do not wish to complete a course that leads to teacher registration you can consider an option to exit with a Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies as an alternative education qualification.
