About

The Associate Degree in Interior Decoration & Design at RMIT will prepare you for a diverse career in Interior Decoration and Design that deals in the planning, designing and embellishment of interior space.The program will support you to become a highly skilled practitioner with a broad range of skills and knowledge to create environmentally oriented and sustainable outcomes incorporating technologies and critical thinking that are applicable to Interior Decoration and Design.The program will provide you with a broad theoretical and technical knowledge of residential and commercial interior fit out, including materials and their applications, colour, lighting, furnishings and decorative treatments that meet a wide range of industry standards and requirements.

You will be proficient in applying principles of aesthetics, function, environment and sustainability to design and implement a range of interior environments.

You will be able to create diverse proposals that will respond to a variety of client briefs as well as having knowledge about the business aspects of decoration and design.The program will prepare you for roles in a range of areas from large scale commercial design offices to small boutique decoration consultancies along with other specialised areas such as consulting in colour and in the retail and wholesale areas of the industry in fabric houses and material suppliers.

Upon completion of the Associate Degree you will be work ready for the interior decoration and design industry, or for further learning in Interior Design or related disciplines.In the final year of the program you will work on a major capstone project across two courses, Decoration and Design Studio 3 (ARCH1387) and Decoration and Design Studio 4 (ARCH1389).

This experience will enable you to synthesize and integrate your knowledge, as well as demonstrate your holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes.The Associate Degree Interior Decoration & Design is primarily delivered in face-to-face mode at the City Campus

Entry requirements

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school) qualification.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL

Selection task

All applicants must complete and submit the selection task.

International English language requirement

A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.0, with no band less than 5.5, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

Learning outcomes

In developing this program, consultation occurred with industry representatives from interior decoration and design industries. That consultation determined specific knowledge and skills that you will be able to demonstrate in order to succeed and contribute to the contemporary interior decoration and design environment.

The program has been designed to ensure you are informed and work ready and to provide you with a global awareness of sustainable practice and the skills and knowledge to develop design agendas that meet a wide range of client and industry briefs.

On completion of the program you will be able to:

  • Work within industry to apply good design practices of decoration and design with a view to developing a sustainable global future.
  • Engage with contemporary trends in the interior decoration & design industry to investigate related emerging manufacturing, materials and technologies.
  • Investigate and adapt knowledge of design history, theory and culture to contemporary Interior Decoration and Design context and practice.
  • Create design solutions to meet the needs of the client and address all industry conventions in both manual and digital formats in response to a design brief.
  • Apply knowledge and skills of current business and professional practices relevant to the decoration and design industry.
  • Implement broad knowledge and skills of space planning, construction and fit out to select and specify materials, furnishings, colour and lighting for sustainable interior solutions.
  • Communicate your ideas and designs through a broad range of technology and presentation techniques to a range of stakeholders including clients and relevant industry practitioners.
  • Apply initiative to work both independently and collaboratively and perform effectively as a member of a creative team with responsibility and accountability for own learning and work.
