About
The BH049 International Studies (Honours) program provides graduates with a research pathway through a PhD to a research career, whilst also developing and expanding your skills and knowledge in international studies for graduate entry employment in a range of sectors including the public sector and organisations with an international focus.Building on the knowledge and skills you have developed and applied at undergraduate degree level, this program enhances your sense of academic and professional identity and fosters and refines your research capability, including through exposing you to a range of professional and research practice within the international studies field.The program is designed to facilitate your engagement with the academic world of global studies.
You will be join a network of talented international studies students and your interactions and collaborations will support you to develop new insights into international issues, and to deepen your knowledge and analysis of complex international issues, challenges and policy imperatives.The program is designed for you to develop your independent research skills and will prepare you to practice as a critical innovator in government, business, international aid, development and education.
This goal is facilitated through your design, research and writing of a scholarly thesis supplemented with advanced course work that enhances your specialised knowledge of the international studies field.
As a graduate, you will be equipped to undertake roles which include:
policy officer, consultant, advocate, research officer or analyst.You will expand and refine your knowledge of social science research methods and integrate and apply your research knowledge and skills to design, conduct and disseminate professional and scholarly findings.
Your completion of a minor thesis will enable you to you to synthesize and integrate your knowledge, connect theory and practice as well as demonstrate your holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes.As a graduate of this program, you will be able to independently solve problems and engage in critical analysis informed by professional and ethical standards of practice.
You will apply your knowledge of, and respect for, key values such as equity and respect for cultural and linguistic diversity.On completion of the program you will be able to confidently communicate and work with others and provide informed insights into international studies and the global context which shapes this field.
You will be able to undertake independent research investigating international policy and developments, and apply informed judgement, balancing international policy and global imperatives development with the needs of diverse communities and groups.

Entry requirements
You must have successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in a relevant discipline with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (out of 4.0).
You must provide a one page statement outlining why you wish to study Honours, what you hope to achieve through studying Honours and what research area/s you are interested in.
International English language requirements
A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.
Learning outcomes
As a graduate of the program, you will be able to:
- Apply creativity, critical innovative thinking and reflective practice to identify and respond to global problems and policy imperatives in international cross cultural contexts, and assess the implications of decision making and actions
- Critique and discern the value of information and knowledge from a wide range of international sources and experiences, and reflect on and evaluate their application to professional practice and the field of research
- Apply a range of social science research methods to independently and collaboratively conduct research which constructs, tests and defends an argument, undertaking social analysis that considers theoretical historical, local and international contexts for decision making
- Professionally communicate national and global knowledge to academic and professional audiences, demonstrating sensitivity to culturally and linguistically diverse groups in a range of contexts
- Critically examine the dominant literature and theoretical knowledge in the field of international studies to undertake innovative policy analysis, assess risk and advocate effectively in international cross cultural policy contexts
