About

The aim of the program is for you to develop your theoretical and technical knowledge and skills in the discipline of photography, including an interactive combination of techniques, creative practice, and critical thinking.

The program emphasises the need for a personal exploration of the underlying meaning of photographic communication.Your learning activities will be studio-based experiences that are designed to mirror professional practice and may include discussion, brainstorming, feedback, critiquing and peer reviews.The Photography Major Project course (VART 3599) will enable you to engage in an investigative project based on an issue relating to your areas of interest.

This is designed as a capstone experience to enable you to synthesise and integrate knowledge, connect theory and practice as well as demonstrate holistic achievement of program learning outcomes.As a graduate of this photography program, you will be a responsive and reflective professional who can work efficiently, both independently and collaboratively.

This program will prepare you to respond with expertise to the demands and developments in your chosen photographic field.

Entry requirements

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school) qualification.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English.

International English language requirement

A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

Selection task

All applicants must complete and submit the selection task. Some applicants may be required to attend an interview.

Learning outcomes

As a graduate of the Bachelor of Arts (Photography) you will demonstrate the knowledge and skills to perform successfully within the photography industry globally.

On successful completion of this program you will be able to:

  • Employ critical, cultural discourses and technical knowledge of contemporary photographic practices and emerging technologies to achieve sophisticated visual outcomes
  • Utilize advanced photographic knolwedge and technical skills to contribute to visual discourses in your chosen field of photography
  • Apply a body of theoretical and practical knowledge and specific skills in the discipline in which to base your professional practice or future study
  • Critically analyse, synthesize and reflect on your discipline in both local and international contexts
  • Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse contexts within your discipline
  • Communicate to audiences within and external to your discipline
  • Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice
  • Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making in your practice or future study.
