About

This program focusses on development and creative generation of games in tandem with research appropriate to artists, designers and developers.

You will gain a deep and critical understanding of digital and non-digital games, and develop a multitude of art, design and technical skills in order to foster your creativity and working knowledge.The program's objectives are to:Immerse you in a collaborative, creative games development and research culture with an emphasis on teamwork, critical reflection and community-minded study.

Give you deep experience with art and design for games, including concept art, level design and gameplay balancing.

Give you expansive creative control of complete game projects in order to go beyond technical mastery and build up a creative folio of professional games production.

Equip you with a critical language for researching games and embedding research throughout your creative practice.The program has a capstone project with the intention that you will leave with a complete game produced in a team environment creatively driven by you, but advised and curated by academic and professional staff.The program is also designed as a pathway to further learning including related Honours and Masters programs.

Game studies and broader games research is embedded throughout the degree and is an important differentiator of the program's graduates.RMIT Bachelor of Design (Games) graduates are distinct in the workplace because they have experienced the most focused and yet most flexible creative games program in Australia.

You will develop highly advanced game projects, sometimes and ideally for public consumption, while specialising in your chosen area such as concept art, game narratives or character creation.

You will have opportunity to choose and combine courses from Computer Science if you wish to develop programming ability, and University elective courses if you wish to gain creative breadth.As a graduate of the program you will be ready to adapt to a global games employment context, and especially prepared for independent game production for digital and mobile marketplaces.

Graduate employment opportunities have included game-specific careers in level design, concept art and illustration, game writing, game engine scripting, 3D modeling and many others.

Other successful graduates have developed successful and sustainable independent businesses in games for health, games for business, 3D visualisation, dynamic web design and many more.

Entry requirements

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school) qualification.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any English other than EAL.

International English language requirement

A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

Selection task

All applicants must complete and submit the selection task. Some applicants may be required to attend a folio presentation.

Learning outcomes

These program learning outcomes have been developed in consultation with creative leaders across the games and entertainment industries with a view to fostering that same creative leadership in graduates.

On successful completion of this program, you will be able to:

  • Apply game art and game design production methods, in both individual and group capacities, to solve creatively generated problems.
  • Develop a technical and conceptual portfolio relevant to game art and design and other forms of interactive entertainment.
  • Apply a body of conceptual and practical knowledge, and game art and design skills, to address other forms of media and communication.
  • Critically analyse how games and play have specific local and global contexts.
  • Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in and around game art and design.
  • Communicate using diverse formats and strategies to audiences within and external to game art and design.
  • Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.
