This program provides you the knowledge and adaptable analytical skills required in the finance service sector.

The program adopts a broad-based approach to help you develop excellent technical, analytical, practical and creative skills and knowledge in the financial planning area.

Financial planners are increasingly working together in a wide range of areas to provide financial advice in existing business models but in this program you will also develop the skills required to provide service that adds clear value for clients.

The main focus of the program is to develop a thorough understanding of financial products, risk management and investment strategies, and develop core skills in order to achieve a financial planner licence and expose you to the dynamic regulatory and legal environment in Australia.

As a graduate of this program you will be prepared to deliver key financial services This program is designed to equip you with the financial planning skills required to provide professional advice in a range of areas.The capstone experience will be undertaken in the course ACCT2288 Financial Advisory Practice and will provide you with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills gained throughout your degree.As a financial planning professional you will be able to occupy roles in stockbroking, funds management, insurance and risk, superannuation, and in other private sector or government organisations which have a requirement for high level, technical expertise in the financial planning area.

The program will also prepare you to work as a professional financial planner in diverse organisations and has been accredited by FPA Australia.

Entry requirements

Applicants with recent secondary education (current and within the past two years):

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent. VCE study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL or equivalent.

If applicable, this includes equity access schemes and any other adjustment factors.

Vocational Education and Training study applicants:

Successful completion of an Australian Diploma or Advanced Diploma or equivalent overseas qualification.

Higher Education Diploma applicants:

Successful completion of an Australian Higher Education Diploma or equivalent overseas qualification.

Associate Degree applicants:

Domestic applicants who have successfully completed the equivalent of four courses in an Australian Associate Degree with GPA converted to ATAR and no double-fail in any required course of the receiving degree.

International applicants who have successfully completed the equivalent of eight courses in an Australian Associate Degree and no double-fail in any required course of the receiving degree.

All Bachelor Degree applicants:

Domestic applicants who have successfully completed the equivalent of two courses at an Australian Bachelor Degree with GPA converted to ATAR and no double-fail in any required course of the receiving degree.

International applicants who have successfully completed the equivalent of four courses at an Australian Bachelor Degree and no double-fail in any required course of the receiving degree.

Open Universities Australia (OUA) applicants:

Successful completion of two Open Universities Australia higher education units. Scored or graded results are required.

Entrance requirements for international onshore applicants:

All non-Australian residents and overseas full-fee paying students are required to meet RMIT English language requirements. For more information on these requirements see English Language Requirements at RMIT.

Applicants with Work and Life experience:

You may satisfy the academic requirements by completing the STAT multiple choice. If you are applying to RMIT as an applicant with work or life experience, you may sit the STAT multiple choice if you:

  • are 19 years of age or over as of 1 January in the year in which you will start your studies and
  • have not been enrolled in secondary studies for at least two years and
  • have no prior secondary school (Year 12), VET studies, HE studies or relevant work experience that can be considered for entry, or these do not meet the minimum academic requirements for the program

STAT results are valid for two years prior to the commencement of study and can be used to meet Year 12 English prerequisites. You are still required to meet all other program prerequisites or equivalents.

Learning outcomes

As a graduate of this program you will be able to use an individual’s financial data to develop and implement a financial plan and give advice on investment, superannuation and insurance strategies. You will be able to integrate theoretical and technical skills in a range of economic and finance applications and contexts.

You will develop your analytic and problem-solving abilities required to determine a client’s financial objective and needs and use their existing financial information to prepare a financial planning solution. You will also be able to prepare and address the specific situations and needs of clients that have different levels of financial understanding and are from diverse cultural backgrounds.
