Bachelor of Design Studies

Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology

About

The Bachelor of Design Studies is a broad-based program that emphasises the development of design thinking and practices, enabling you to take a design-based approach to problem-solving and innovation in a range of social, ethical, professional and cultural contexts.

It is delivered primarily on campus, in a face-to-face, classroom and studio learning environment, and includes an industry internship placement. In this program, you will build a well-rounded design capability based on development of sound theoretical and contextual knowledge, practical project work, technical skills acquisition, and work-integrated learning in more than one design discipline.Up to two design disciplines can be selected from a set of options that include visual, physical, virtual, service-based and/or mediated design disciplines.Year one - design discovery - ensures you are equipped with the broad theoretical, contextual, creative and technical capabilities needed to support progress in a specific design discipline.

Year two - design discipline - offers a flexible choice of specialisation in up to two areas of design.

The courses in year 2 include University electives, studio-based project work, skills workshops and theory seminars.

Year three - integrated design - theoretical, contextual, creative, technical and professional aspects of the program are integrated and applied in one of three strands of investigation – i.e.

social, environmental or sustainability issues (preferably in Vietnam), delivered as two 24-credit integrated capstone studio courses and an internship placement. The capstone courses integrate theoretical, skills-based and project-based experience in applied project work in a studio setting.

The two capstone courses, as well as the internship, are structured to give you the opportunity to apply your design capability in real-world and work-oriented situations.
