Bachelor of Fashion and Textiles (Sustainable Innovation)

Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology

About

Technology innovations and improved environmental, social and ethical practices will fundamentally change how clothes are made, consumed and experienced.

To support the development of technology-led sustainable solutions for the fashion industry, capabilities in technology and sustainability need to be developed and combined with traditional fashion and textile craft-based knowledge and skills.

This requires user-centred and interdisciplinary approaches at the intersection of design, technology, science and art.The Bachelor of Fashion and Textiles (Sustainable Innovation) program provides you with the capabilities to work in diverse roles across the field of fashion and textiles sustainable innovation.

You will learn about ethical and sustainable production practices, digital technologies, material innovations and wearables.

As you progress through the degree, you can choose to specialise in at least one of these areas and/or complement your skills through developing a Minor specialisation from another Fashion and Textiles program in fashion design, textile design or fashion enterprise. You will learn through making and doing.

You will experience a variety of contemporary learning opportunities, both face-to-face and online, as a way for you to attain a comprehensive range of practical, theoretical and technical skills and knowledge, that reflect real-world industry situations.

Approaches include:

project-based activities, working to an industry brief (both problem-solving and speculative), prototyping, Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) and global mobility opportunities. In your final semester, you will undertake a capstone experience in MANU2506 Fashion and Textiles Sustainable Innovation Project Launch.

In this course you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your acquired knowledge and skills in fashion and textiles sustainable innovation by participating in, collaborating with or reflecting on current industry or disciplinary practices. On successful completion of the program, you have opportunities to enter into a variety of professional roles in the global fashion and textiles industry in areas of sustainability, technical textiles, sportswear, protective clothing, research and innovation, as well as aligned industries such as health and automotive.

There are also opportunities to begin your own start-up enterprise or pursue further studies at honours and/or postgraduate level.

The program is delivered face-to-face on the Brunswick campus.
