About
The program will enable you to develop your knowledge and skills relevant to international professional practice in the development and humanitarian sectors, broadly defined to encompass knowledge of international systems and global processes, cross-cultural negotiation and management, and strategic and ethical leadership.
Working with the challenges of culturally diverse contexts will be integral to your preparation for an international development career.You will work with leading global studies scholars to prepare for international and cross-cultural careers in development and humanitarian practice, government, business and community organisations.
You will be trained in cross-cultural workplace practices, offered international study exchange opportunities, and be able to design, source and undertake an international internship oriented towards your career interests in international development.
You will study your courses on campus in RMIT's city campus, located in Melbourne.The capstone experience of this program is HUSO2314 Global Internship.
In this course you will undertake a professional industry internship in an organisation of relevance to your career aspirations.
You will draw upon the knowledge and skills developed throughout the degree and apply them in an industry setting, enabling you to gain workplace experience and to begin your transition to a professional career and/or further study.On completion of the program you will be a versatile, articulate and imaginative thinker, oriented to begin an internationally orientated career.
You will be knowledgeable about global intercultural, social, linguistic and political issues and processes, and possess initiative, independence, and entrepreneurial skills.You will have opportunities throughout the program to gain a sense of professional direction and consider possible employment futures.
As a graduate of this program you can expect to work in professional roles in a range of organisations with international orientations, including government, businesses, non-government organisations and community organisations both in Australia and overseas.
Our graduates have gone on to work as policy advisers, researchers, diplomatic staff, business managers, entrepreneurs, aid and development workers, community sector staff and in many other roles in Australia and internationally.

Entry requirements
You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school) qualification.

Prerequisites
Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English.
International English language requirement
A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program you will be able to:
- Apply a body of theoretical and practical knowledge of international development, gender and development, global cultures, language and economic issues to your professional practice or further study.
- Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on knowledge about a rapidly changing world derived from multiple sources, perspectives and values systems with an emphasis on international development and humanitarian challenges.
- Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to effectively solve a range of problems associated with policies and programs in international and cross-cultural settings, and assess economic, cultural, social, environmental and political opportunities and risks.
- Work professionally and effectively with others in diverse cultural, linguistic and organisational contexts, and to adapt practices and knowledge to local circumstances.
- Communicate effectively in international and cross-cultural contexts, and facilitate collaborative partnerships within diverse communities of practice, using appropriate formats, media and styles.
- Assist in the identification of needs, the design, planning, resourcing and implementation of research and development projects in international and cross-cultural settings.
- Reflect on the experience of personal and professional practice in international and cross-cultural settings and to act in professional settings responsibly, ethically and with integrity.
