This qualification reflects the role of workers who develop and facilitate programs for young people through a range of community based programs designed to address the social, behavioural, health, welfare, developmental and protection needs of young people.

This work may be undertaken through employment in community, government and non-government agencies.Graduates who successfully complete the program have a range of possible career options and may be employed as:Community development worker (youth) Indigenous youth worker Recreational youth activities worker Residential support worker Youth and family resource officer Youth and family services worker Youth housing support worker Juvenile justice worker.

Entry requirements

Academic entrance requirements: There are no minimum academic requirements for entry VCE prerequisites: There are no prerequisites. Extra requirements Through VTAC or Direct application you must complete and submit a Personal Statement explaining your reasons for wanting to study youth work, your intended career path, the personal strengths and attributes you will bring to the course and include details of any relevant work or other experience.

Police Check and Working with Children Check

There will be a requirement for you to have successfully gained a Police Check and Working with Children Check prior to attending your Work Placement. Your police Check and Working with Children Check must be current.

Learning outcomes

This nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification delivers competency-based training and assessment, designed to help you develop the skills and knowledge (competency) needed to perform effectively in the work you are training for. Competency-based assessment allows you to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to complete workplace activities, safely and consistently, at the standard required in your job, in a range of situations and environments. This could involve showing an assessor how you plan and carry out tasks while explaining what you know about the task and the relevant work environment. It could also involve completing a project and reporting on the both the process and outcomes.

If you are working, your work supervisor may provide the assessor with a report on the skills and knowledge you have demonstrated.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (e.g. through prior paid or voluntary work experience), you can be assessed and have these skills and knowledge formally recognised. This process is called Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). There is information on the RMIT website about how to apply for RPL
