Entry requirements

This program is suitable for people who have some experience in delivering training. This can be in a range of formal and informal contexts. Please note, the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment provides you with the skills and knowledge to train and assess in the national Vocational Education and Training System but it does not provide you with an area of vocational expertise in which to train and assess. Those entering the program must be able to demonstrate vocational competency in their proposed teaching and assessing area.

Applicants are required to

  • Demonstrate vocational competency in your proposed teaching and assessing area. Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, and may include, but is not limited to, holding a relevant unit of competency or qualification. Evidence may be a certified copy of your qualification or evidence of your industry knowledge and experience described in a personal statement or may include supporting documentation such as a letter of support for your application from your employer.
  • Provide a CV
  • Provide a personal statement (minimum half a page) that outlines your reasons for wanting to do the program and your training experience.

The Program Coordinator may arrange a phone or face to face interview with you to discuss your application if necessary.

Arrangements for students not currently working in a training and assessment environment.

Usually students in this program are working in some form of a training and assessment role. If you will not be working in, or have access to, a training and assessment environment for conducting assessment projects during your enrolment in the program please contact the Program Coordinator to discuss possible options.

Arrangements for supervision

When you undertake the unit TAEASS402 Assess Competence in the program you will be required to conduct assessments under the supervision of a person who has the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or meets the assessor requirements as per the Standards for RTOs 2015. If you do not have access to a qualified assessor to supervise your assessments, you should contact the Program Coordinator as soon as possible so that suitable arrangements can be made.

Learning outcomes

This nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) qualification is competency-based.

This means that it is designed to enable you to develop the practical skills and knowledge (competency) needed to perform the duties and tasks in the job you are training for.

Assessment in a competency-based program is about being able to demonstrate that you have developed these practical skills and areas of knowledge, and that you can perform at the standard required in the job. This could involve showing an assessor how you plan and carry out tasks, and explaining to the assessor how you know what you are doing. It could also involve completing a project and presenting a report on the process and outcomes. If you are working, your work supervisor may provide the assessor with a report on your competency.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (e.g. through prior paid or voluntary work experience), you can be assessed and have these skills and knowledge formally recognised at any point during the program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – refer to https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/student-essentials/enrolment/apply-for-credit
