This design qualification equips you with the potential to move on to higher levels of study.

It is also a basic entry point to a design-based vocation by providing design knowledge and skills in visual communication and 3D design.

These educational pathways may lead towards the following programs:

Communication design, graphic design, graphic arts, multimedia, product design and visual merchandising, interior design and decoration, advertising.

The program focuses on the investigation and development of design projects in a studio environment.

Entry requirements

There are no academic entrance requirements.

Applicants who are not currently studying year 12 are encouraged to submit a personal statement outlining:

  • your reasons for wanting to study this course
  • your intended career path
  • your personal strengths and attributes relevant to the course
  • details of any related work or voluntary experience

If you do not submit a personal statement you will be considered on the basis of academic achievement only.

International English language requirement A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 5.5, with no band less than 5.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English equivalents web page

Learning outcomes

This nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) qualification is competency-based. This means that it is designed to enable you to develop skills and knowledge (competency) needed to perform the tasks you are training for.

Assessment in a competency-based program is about being able to demonstrate that you have developed the skills and areas of knowledge, and that you can perform at the standard required at this level.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program e.g. through work experience, you can be assessed and have these skills and knowledge formally recognised at any point during the program.
