About
The Certificate IV in EAL (Further Study) is part of an academic preparation program at RMIT University.

The program aims to provide learners with the cultural understanding, advanced English language, and tertiary study skills to participate in further study contexts.
This certificate is offered in Semester 1 and in Semester 2.

Entry requirements
This certificate is for people 16 years (on 1 January in year of commencement) and over who come from a non-English speaking background and want to improve their English, or who have had an interrupted education and/or want to develop further study skills.
Entry into this qualification must be determined according to the following criteria:
- a participant’s current English language skills. (the Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing units in the Framework will provide the basis for initial assessment processes and placement of participants at the appropriate proficiency level)*
- a participant’s prior formal education experience, both overseas and in Australia
- any prior EAL learning
- a participant’s learning and pathway needs including employability skills, literacies (digital and other literacies), and further educational and vocational training needs.
All of the above criteria are assessed for each applicant at an interivew to ensure that they are correctly placed into the appropriate EAL certificate level.
*As a general guide to entry in this program, learners should have literacy skills to a minimum exit Level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

Learning outcomes
This nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification delivers competency-based training and assessment, designed to help you develop the skills and knowledge (competency) needed to perform effectively in the work you are training for. Competency-based assessment allows you to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to complete workplace activities, safely and consistently, at the standard required in your job, in a range of situations and environments. This could involve showing an assessor how you plan and carry out tasks while explaining what you know about the task and the relevant work environment. It could also involve completing a project and reporting on the both the process and outcomes.
If you are working, your work supervisor may provide the assessor with a report on the skills and knowledge you have demonstrated.
If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (e.g. through prior paid or voluntary work experience), you can be assessed and have these skills and knowledge formally recognised. This process is called Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). There is information on the RMIT website about how to apply for RPL
