Diploma of Visual Arts

Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology

About

The Diploma of Visual Arts reflects the role of visual artists who combine specialised technical, creative and conceptual skills to prepare for and develop an emerging arts practice.

They are able to plan and realise a body of work in one or more art forms.

Visual arts practice at this level is underpinned by a sound grasp of art theory and history and the ability to critically analyse and synthesise information from a range of sources.

Discourse and communication around complex ideas are also required. This program prepares individuals who wish to pursue a career as visual artists or in other creative fields.

This is achieved by studying practical and theoretical courses developed in conjunction with the arts industry.

Areas of study include painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, digital imaging, public art and art theory.

The major emphasis of the program is the production of a folio of work that reflects your personal creative inquiry.

The folio will display a sequential development, with emphasis on the acquisition of skills and the adaptation of those skills for a production of works based upon a sound personal philosophical base. The diploma is developed around ideas of integrated course experiences, reflecting contemporary notions of the arts practitioner as multi-disciplined.

The program prepares individuals who wish to pursue a career as visual artists, continue to further study or work in creative fields.Students will be admitted into the lowest level qualification.

Learning outcomes

This nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification delivers competency-based training and assessment, designed to help you develop the skills and knowledge (competency) needed to perform effectively in the work you are training for. Competency-based assessment allows you to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to complete workplace activities, safely and consistently, at the standard required in your job, in a range of situations and environments. This could involve showing an assessor how you plan and carry out tasks while explaining what you know about the task and the relevant work environment. It could also involve completing a project and reporting on the both the process and outcomes.

If you are working, your work supervisor may provide the assessor with a report on the skills and knowledge you have demonstrated.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (e.g. through prior paid or voluntary work experience), you can be assessed and have these skills and knowledge formally recognised. This process is called Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). There is information on the RMIT website about how to apply for RPL
