Advanced Diploma of Surveying
Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology
About
Surveying is based on the collection, management and presentation of information related to surveying, mapping and geographical information systems.
These services are used in a wide range of circumstances and are an integral part of local, state and national land management programs, building and construction projects, environmental studies, navigational systems and monitoring of emergency situations. This program provides the educational and practical training for a career in the surveying, mapping, and geographical information systems (GIS) industries. The emphasis is on practical experience using industry-standard equipment.
You will use various surveying technologies and software for electronic data capture, processing and presentation.Areas of study include:
Determine client spatial requirements, Conduct an advanced GNSS control survey, Conduct complex engineering set out surveys, Monitor complex engineering surveying structures, Undertake site surveys and set-out procedures for building projects, Develop a subdivision survey design for local government approval, Conduct design and set out survey, Design a spatial project plan and Apply quality control measures to spatial information services industry. When you have successfully completed the program you will be able to articulate to the Bachelor of Science (Surveying) (Honours) or the Bachelor of Science (Geospatial Science) (Honours).
This program is delivered face to face at RMIT City Campus.

Learning outcomes
This nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) qualification is competency-based.This means that it is designed to enable you to develop the practical skills and knowledge (competency) needed to perform the duties and tasks in the job you are training for. Assessment in a competency-based program is about being able to demonstrate that you have developed these practical skills and areas of knowledge, and that you can perform at the standard required in the job. This could involve showing an assessor how you plan and carry out tasks, and explaining to the assessor how you know what you are doing. It could also involve completing a project and presenting a report on the process and outcomes. If you are working, your work supervisor may provide the assessor with a report on your competency.
If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (e.g. through prior paid or voluntary work experience), you can be assessed and have these skills and knowledge formally recognised at any point during the program. There is information on the RMIT website about how to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – refer to http://www.rmit.edu.au/students/enrolment/credit
