The Diploma of Design(Multimedia Systems) provides an introduction to the skills and abilities required to develop multimedia products and systems.As the first stage of the three year Bachelor of Design (Digital Media) the Diploma offers graduates a technical foundation in design, programming, hardware as well some exposure to the communication, teamworking and business skills required for success in this industry.

Entry requirements

A unit of mathematics to year 12 VCE standard Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 5.5, with no band less than 5.0, or equivalent.

Learning outcomes

The Diploma is designed to progressively develop the following components of capability. 1. Technologies The ability to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic computer systems, including hardware components, data communications, display devices and technology, data capture devices, data representation
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the construction of systems that are robust, reliable, maintainable and scalable
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of operating systems and network operating systems and the services and functions that they provide
  • Demonstrate an understanding of web and internet technologies including standards

2. Techniques & Processes The ability to:

  • Create multimedia and communication products, using a range of tools
  • Understand the range of multimedia products, their costs and complexity and methods for determining appropriate application

3. Design The ability to:

  • Create multimedia and communication products, using a range of tools
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the theory and practice of designing an effective human/computer interface
  • Design products within a creative environment with regard to system constraints
  • Design media content and products that reflect an understanding of the
  • practice of communication theory and implications of technological media
  • convergence
  • Demonstrate an understanding of graphic/visual/aural/motion design
  • principles and apply these across a range of media platforms

4. Business The ability to:

  • Design products within a creative environment with regard to system constraints
  • Develop a business case for a project
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the theory and practice of innovation and entrepreneurship

5. Teamwork The ability to:

  • Negotiate active solutions with team and clients
  • Work in multidiscipline teams, and to provide expertise to that team

6. Professional Practice The ability to:

  • Understand the range of multimedia products, their costs and complexity and methods for determining appropriate application
  • Demonstrate an understanding of trends in the uses of multimedia products in the workplace to support communication, information management
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the implications of copyright laws within an international context and incorporate these within professional practice
