About

The Diploma of Languages is designed to provide you with an advanced level of proficiency in a language other than English, with a focus on practical language skills.

You will be able to speak, comprehend, read and write your chosen language in a wide range of contexts.

The program aims to enhance your knowledge of the cultures and societies associated with the language, and equips you with intercultural knowledge for social and workplace application.In addition, the Diploma will introduce you to the socio-linguistic and political aspects of language use and will prepare you for employment in culturally diverse organisations in the countries in which the language is spoken.The program offers opportunities for further learning through extra-curricular activities such as student-run language clubs, international exchange programs and study tours.The Diploma is designed to complement undergraduate studies in a range of disciplines at RMIT and can be taken concurrently with any RMIT Undergraduate program, or as a stand-alone program.

Entry requirements

If you are currently enrolled in a Melbourne based RMIT undergraduate program you are eligible to apply for entry into the Diploma of Languages without having to meet additional academic entrance requirements.

If not already enrolled in a Melbourne based RMIT undergraduate program, domestic applicants may be eligible for entry into the Diploma of Languages on a part-time or full-time basis, subject to the following minimum academic entrance requirements or equivalent:

  • VCE Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL.

Pre-enrolment placement tests are required for all students, except those who have no background knowledge or have never studied the language at all. Post-enrolment Level 1 in class screening is conducted to maintain homogenous language proficiency levels.

Learning outcomes

In this program you will be assessed on your development of program learning outcomes in areas of communication, life-long learning and cultural and social awareness. Upon successful completion of the program you will be able to:

  • Communicate effectively in the target language in a range of forms and in different international and cross-cultural contexts, using appropriate modes of communication including electronic, written, graphic, oral and aural forms
  • Reflect on the role of culture in communication, and apply this knowledge in a range of cross-cultural interactions
  • Access and critically examine a range of resources (including text and electronic) to further your learning in your target language
  • Effectively manage your own learning, developing skills in life long learning of languages and cross-cultural communication
  • Work independently and in diverse teams to solve problems, using effective communication strategies
  • Adapt and develop effective communication strategies to address linguistic diversity in the workplace
  • Reflect on the role of the languages in cultures and societies, and apply this knowledge in local and global situations
