The Graduate Certificate in Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building program provides a multidisciplinary environment which will introduce you to the study of the science, design and management of sustainable buildings The program will provide you with a foundation to further develop the skills and knowledge required to progress or diversify your professional practice and/or undertake further study.This program emphasises the application of theoretical knowledge to practice.

The courses delivered within the program introduce you to the specialised domains within the field of energy efficient and sustainable building including building physics and project management.In conjunction with the GD189 Graduate Diploma in Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building and the MC209 Master of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building, this program addresses the industry need for energy efficient and sustainable building specialists with a particular focus on developing your multidisciplinary understanding of the design, performance and development of sustainable buildings.As energy efficient and sustainable building field is positioned at the intersection of several disciplines, including building science, technologies and design, the program will develop your knowledge of the role of building science research and innovative design practice in addressing critical issues associated with the sustainability of the built environment.This program requires on-campus attendance.

The program is delivered full time and part time in face to face mode, supported by various blended learning activities (including on-line).Graduates may pursue many professional pathways, including work in private practice, state or local government, or in private practice as a consultant to building design or, property development projects.

Successful completion of this program also provides a pathway to further learning in the MC209 Master of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building.Upon successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building program you may also be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University.

Entry requirements

You must have:

  • successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in a discipline that demonstrates knowledge and skills in construction, technology, engineering, management, architecture or design; OR
  • significant work experience or professional practice related to energy efficiency, sustainability or building and construction

As a guide, significant experience would generally be a minimum of three years of experience in middle to upper management roles that related to energy efficiency, sustainability or building and construction.

English language requirements

Learning outcomes

As a graduate of this program you will be able to:

1. Analyse, synthesise and apply sustainable building theory and principles to address industry issues, and implement new directions in sustainable building design

2. Professionally communicate your ideas and strategies, justifying decisions to diverse stakeholders, including government and industry stakeholders

3. Employ your knowledge of sustainable building and performance theory, and leading technologies, to develop solutions that respond to the diverse needs of sustainable building project stakeholders

4. Work autonomously and utilise effective team work to plan sustainable building projects, responsive to the needs of diverse stakeholders.
