Accident investigation is a systematic process whereby safety deficiencies are identified, and adequate recommendations are put in place with an aim to prevent incidents and accidents in transport systems.

Accidents are often a consequence of a combination of diverse contributory factors in the context of complex systems.

The investigation process requires highly experienced professionals with a good balance of both technical and managerial skills.

This is a specialist area which enables professionals working on transport safety related roles across the transport sector to plan, manage and participate in the accident investigation process of air, rail and marine vehicles and associated systems.

The skills and competencies provided by this program are relevant to a broad range of professionals across the transport sector, including operators, regulators and infrastructure managers.In the Graduate Certificate in Transport Safety Investigation program, you will have the opportunity to explore a range of topics which are key to the role of an accident investigator, enabling you to participate in the main phases of an investigation, namely evidence collection, evidence examination and the analysis and elaboration of a final report.

The objectives of this program are to give you the fundamental knowledge required to conduct or manage a transport accident investigation.

Upon completion of this program you will be able to:analyse complex technical and managerial assets in a transport system environment, and develop solutions resorting to multidisciplinary technical and scientific knowledge to ensure problem-free operations;

find tailor-made solutions from an array of possibilities through systematic problem solving and technological systems design methodologies operating in the transport industry;

communicate with a wide range of key industry stakeholders in professional and effective manner;

build, lead and work with teams with trust and respect;

achieve results in an industry characterised by a high level of regulations and complexity of operational scenarios with fast-paced evolution of associated technologies.This program will be delivered face-to-face at the Melbourne city campus.

Some laboratory activities may require travel to Bundoora campus.

Entry requirements

Program Entry Requirements

Successfully completion of a Bachelor degree (AQF level 7 or 8) in a relevant field, such as Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, Aviation, Mechanical/Automotive Engineering, Naval Engineering or cognate areas,

OR

3 years of relevant work experience*, including at least one year at manager level (or equivalent),

OR

5 years of work experience in the transport sector (aviation, road or maritime).

*Relevant work experience is considered to be in role as related with Accident Investigation and/or Safety Management Systems. In some cases, it is required that work experience is at manager level. Applicants applying on the basis of any work experience must provide a detailed CV/resume outlining roles, responsibilities, and length of time in relevant role. The number of years of work experience are considered in terms of full-time equivalence.

English Language Requirements
